Little King of The South[]
During the Peruvian government's war against left-wing guerrillas, they killed Casilda's grandson as well as his parents due to their association with the guerrillas. Sometime later, Casilda and her younger granddaughter Mayte heard their dog barking. Going outside, they found the barely conscious Enrique, who had fled from Central America. Taking in the boy, she had him lay on a bed while she cooked some soup for him. Once Enrique woke up, Casilda was sitting at his bedside and encouraged him to eat the soup since it would cure his hunger. Though hesitant at first, he ate her soup and was nursed back to health by her care. While Casilda gave him shelter, Enrique paid them back by giving them a share of his money he made from his new item procurement business in town.
Sometime later, around the time that Enrique invited CIA agents Eda and Jaden to negotiate with the guerrillas to plan for President Duarte's assassination, Casilda had trouble with her stiff rocking chair. The same time that he brought the agents to his house, Enrique bought a new rocking chair for her size and informed her and Mayte of the item. Though Casilda continued to sit due to her sleepiness, Mayte told Enrique that she could tell that her grandmother was pleased. The next morning, she listened to Enrique bid goodbye to them.[1]
Some minutes later, the military began their assault on both the guerrilla stronghold nearby as well as the residents in town. In addition to massacring many civilians, one soldier barged into Casilda's residence and pushed the elderly woman out of the house onto the ground. As she laid there, the soldier grabbed Mayte by her hair and demanded to know where the guerrillas were, claiming that he knew they were housing guerrillas. When he punched Mayte to the ground, Casilda embraced her granddaughter and angrily urged the soldier to stop since she was just a child. Just as the soldier was about to execute them both, Enrique returned and knocked him unconscious. As he helped Casilda stand up, another soldier exited the residence and saw them. Immediately, he shot at the three residents, causing them to run. Though Luciana killed the soldier, Casilda was hit in the chest with a grave wound. In pain, she urged her grandchildren and Enrique to leave her behind, but they adamantly refused. Frantically thinking of an idea, Enrique advised them to follow him, and he helped Casilda walk to their destination.
Outside the town, the four went to the part of the road where Eda and Jaden were hiding, and Casilda held onto Enrique as he assured the CIA agents that they would give up their weapons. To their surprise, several soldiers tailed them, so Casilda's group and the agents briefly teamed up and killed the soldiers. Right after, the elderly woman collapsed onto Enrique's lap while Luciana decided to force Eda by gunpoint to drive them to a hospital outside of the area. As they left, Luciana and Mayte embraced Casilda as she was bleeding to death in the backseat. Taking her granddaughters' hands, Casilda pleaded with them to get along with each other and prayed for their safety right before dying. Subsequently, the group stopped to the side of the road. Although Eda wanted to bury Casilda in the ground at the unknown location to save time, Mayte pleaded with her to reconsider. Having a solution, Enrique told them to put her body in the car trunk and he would contact a mortician who could discreetly complete the job of burying her in a marked grave.[2]
Agreeing on the plan, the group fled the area after driving past a military checkpoint. While Jaden left their safehouse to get instructions from a CIA contact, Luciana forced Eda to help them bring Casilda to the mortician. At the funeral home, the mortician spoke to Mayte and Enrique and gave them the address where the girls' grandmother would be buried.[3] Some day later after the end of President Duarte's self-coup, though the military ended their repression of the populace, Mayte felt that she had to avenge her grandmother and other slain family members because the United States allowed President Duarte to remain in power and not be punished for his crimes against civilians.[4]
