Chen (チン), alternatively called Chin in the English version of the anime, was a minor Chinese crime boss in Roanapur.

Appearance[]

Chen was an adult Chinese man with a skinny build, tan skin, short black hair, and a thin chin beard. He wore a white suit with a purple dress shirt and sea-blue pants. Additionally, on his body he wore various golden jewelry items, including a gold-chained necklace, a gold wristwatch, and two gold rings on his right hand.

History[]

Chase for ring-ding ships[]

Chen had became jealous of how Balalaika—who was a Russian and considered an outsider to Roanapur by most of the minor bosses—had become successful while his businesses, which included drug smuggling, had fallen off. In town, seeing Dutch using a payphone, he had his driver stop the car next to the pirate. Greeting him, Chen sternly asked him for how much longer he would work for Balalaika, insulting her for having no honor and stealing all of his business. Hearing the crime boss warn Dutch to cut his partnership, Dutch reminded him that he pulled out of a previous deal gone awry with the New People's Army and the Lagoon Company had to deal with the mess. Annoyed, Chen asked him not to bring up past mishaps, but Dutch walked away and asserted that he would ship his goods if he agreed to his terms. Angry at Dutch's rejection, Chen tricked a trusted source of his, Donnie Yen, by giving him phony information about a shipping job to pick up goods from the Vietnamese military at Phú Quốc.

At a Chinese restaurant, the crime boss was informed that Dutch agreed to the fabricated mission, so he called Luak and contracted him to have his pirate fleet (six small Vietnam War-era swift boats) ambush the Lagoon Company on their PT boat and sink it. In return, Chen told Luak that he would get a cut of the pay for shipments going to Kalimantan. However, at the same time, Chen had openly boasted about setting up Dutch, so much so that the entire city had word of his plans. Upon finding out that Revy had single-handedly killed off Luak's men and destroyed his swift boats, Chen cursed Luak as he quickly packed his suitcases in his hotel room.

As he tried to leave his room to flee Roanapur, he was confronted by Balalaika and Hotel Moscow. Shocked, Chen tried to plead with her to spare him by declaring that he could clear up the alleged misunderstanding over a meal, but she immediately kicked him in the face. As he laid down and bled from his face, Balalaika grabbed Chen by his collar and stared into his eyes, advising him to pray since that was all he could do. Subsequently, he was interrogated, beaten up and then gagged and tied to a chair with an explosive. While Chen cried silently at sunset on the chair, Balalaika called Dutch to placate his sore feeling about the hoax job, detonating the bomb in the hotel room and killing him in a large explosion.[1]
