Enrique Gasol (エンリケ・ガソル Enrike Gasoru) is a former member of the North Gulf Cartel and Ruggles's former informant. He had a grudge against both the cartel and Ruggles for the circumstances that led to his older brother's murder. After he betrayed both the CIA and the cartel, he fled Central America and was smuggled into South America in Peru.
On the verge of death after his escape specialists betrayed him, he was saved by Mayte and her grandmother Casilda, later joining left-wing guerrillas in the country that opposed President Duarte's authoritarian government in order to gain power and make a name for himself. Because many people in Peru opposed President Duarte, Enrique's guerrillas secretly allied with the parliamentary opposition coalition led by Farias Cordero, who covertly requested that they assassinate the president. Because he needed power and could not openly ally with the political parties, he secured the CIA's backing of the alliance against Duarte. In his role, Enrique served as the point of contact between the guerrillas and the opposition coalition.
Appearance[]
Enrique is a young Hispanic boy with a skinny build, short black hair, and tan skin. He was first seen wearing a short-sleeved button-up casual shirt, dark jeans, and white shoes. When he later reappears, he is seen wearing a brimmed cap, a dark jacket with white sleeves, and dark jeans. He uses a pistol for a weapon.
Personality[]
Enrique is a cunning person who has been able to deceive others, be it the CIA or his cartel. He cared passionately about his late brother to the point that he would wait a long time to get revenge on those responsible for his death. Furthermore, Enrique cares greatly about having power and making a kingdom led by himself. A particular belief he adheres to is that money is power even if it is not justice. In order to ascertain power, Enrique is willing to ally with anyone who will help him achieve his goal.
Eda Initial Stage history[]
Enrique's brother was the CIA agent Ruggles's original informant who was forced to gather information in a rushed manner. Because he hurt the organization, the cartel punished Enrique's brother by dropping him alive in a large pool of acid. When his unrecognizable body was returned to Enrique, the boy swore an oath to his brother that he would personally kill Ruggles.[1] After his brother's death, Enrique took his brother's place as Ruggles's informant and infiltrated the cartel, giving the cartel's smuggling routes to the CIA agent so that he could use the same routes to smuggle weapons and funding to places in South America that the CIA could not reach from their headquarters. Six months into his infiltration, Enrique managed to rank up quickly and become the right-hand man of Ivan, the cartel's leader.[2]
Devastating New Face[]
When Eda traveled to Central America to replace Ruggles in his role as a local case agent, she dealt with some secret police and then met Ruggles, who soon guided her to Ruggles's place. There, upon seeing Eda, Enrique angrily asked Ruggles if he lost his mind. Leaning next to the boy, Ruggles told him that he did not have to worry about her, elaborating that Eda was well-trained in physical and mental abilities but lacked experience. Still slouching, the skeptical Enrique retorted that he could not slack off by educating a schoolgirl. To his shock, he learned that Eda single-handedly fought off a group of secret police when she arrived in the country. Straightening his back, Enrique glared at Eda as Ruggles informed Eda about Enrique's informant background and Eda's role to use his information to help the CIA. When Eda sarcastically greeted Enrique, he in turn glared and insulted her, irritating Ruggles. After the meeting, Enrique walked alone in town and proclaimed to himself and his brother that the "Yankees" were underestimating him.[2]
That evening, Enrique again spoke with Ruggles and was still hesitant about Eda's skills since she made trouble by fighting the secret police as well as the street thugs in her hotel room whom she disposed of. When the boy reminded Ruggles that he initially told him that Eda would run away upon encountering danger, the relaxed agent declared that he gave up on her, but Enrique asked him if he truly did not care that Eda would take his place since he made great money from his operation. Pausing for a bit, Ruggles confirmed and stated that he enjoyed the money but had no choice to accept his relocation due to orders from his boss, surprising Enrique. Furious, Enrique angrily claimed that Ruggles had used him and his brother and was then trying to toss him aside. Annoyed by his outburst, Ruggles grabbed the boy by his collar and glared at him, asking who he thought he was to insult him. After being tossed back, Enrique angrily questioned how he would get to the United States as a reward for their dealings. Unconcerned, Ruggles informed Enrique that his desire to go to the U.S. would be postponed due to the former's relocation, saying that the boy would have to speak with Eda to restart his chance at becoming an American citizen.
In the later part of the night, Enrique requested a friend in the cartel to call the cartel leader to report that Enrique was an informant for the CIA. After finishing the call which enraged the leader, Enrique's concerned friend asked him what he would do. Not scared about the danger, Enrique replied that it was okay since the cartel would only go after the CIA if they were angry enough. Again that night, Enrique then told the friend to anonymously tip off the secret police about the cartel's plan to attack the CIA agents. Outside the building where the gangsters who tried to attack Eda were meeting, Enrique was smugly pleased to overhear them confirm that they would take advantage of the cartel's attack to get rid of the CIA agents for using them. The subsequent morning, Enrique donned a sunhat and packed a suitcase, leaving with Ruggles to go to the United States. Although Eda was doubtful about driving both men, Ruggles calmly assured her that Enrique was merely helping him.
As Eda drove, she asked Ruggles what was in his large suitcase, making Enrique snicker. Ruggles only answered that it was a guarantee to his survival, then smacking the back of Enrique's head and telling him to shut up. Seeing pedestrians in front, Eda stopped the car and immediately the cartel launched a rocket at the vehicle, tossing Enrique and the other two backward. Quickly, Enrique got out of the car and he, Ruggles and Eda began running as another rocket was fired seconds later at the car. In the hail of bullets fired by the cartel gangsters from the rooftops, Enrique opened a nearby door and ordered the two CIA agents to follow him. Inside, Ruggles briefly placed down his heavy briefcase as Eda quickly shot one man on the stairs. Running up, Enrique began reciprocally covering Eda and Ruggles as they headed to the building's roof and shot several men.
Getting onto the roof, Ruggles ran out of bullets and wondered where they would go next. To Ruggles's surprise, Enrique kicked Eda off the roof, and the boy pointed his pistol at the older man. Ticked off, Ruggles demanded to know why he kicked Eda off the roof. Commenting that he should know why, Enrique responded that he was getting revenge for his brother since he had died as a result of Ruggles placing him on assignments that compromised his life. As soon as Enrique declared that he would fulfill his oath to his brother and prepared to fire, Ruggles quickly lifted up his suitcase as a shield. Enrique fired several shots but was pushed onto the ground by Ruggles, who wrestled with him and stated that he would not let a brat like him kill him in such a place. To both men's surprise, several secret police officers began shooting at them, and Enrique escaped unharmed while Ruggles was shot off the roof with his suitcase. Going down into the alleyway, Enrique ran to the dead Ruggles and angrily shouted that he wanted to be the one to kill Ruggles. Pointing her gun at the boy, Eda ordered Enrique to get up, but he reminded her that there was a war between the cartel and secret police.
Seeing through his sham, Eda remarked that she knew that Enrique wanted to use the firefight as a distraction to kill both of them. Not caring about her deduction, Enrique snapped back that he solely wanted revenge. As the cartel and secret police continued firing at each other, Eda decided that he would help her escape. Smirking, she commented that he was smarter than Ruggles and could see that he truly had no plans to die in Central America. Ignoring her order at first, the boy continued to grab money from Ruggles's suitcase. Hearing Enrique claim that dead people did not need money, Eda joked that he was rather shallow for his age. Frustrated, he furiously clarified that money was power even if it was not justice, advising her to remember that well. Guiding Eda onto the roof, Enrique stated that the area seemed clear, but he was immediately interrupted by the secret police group's leader shooting a bullet into his chest, knocking him off the roof into the alleyway. After Eda momentarily stood off with the policeman and shot him dead, she ran down to the alleyway only to find a small blood trail, not seeing Enrique anywhere.[1]
Little King of The South[]
Sometime later, having survived being shot in the back, Enrique made a deal with human smugglers using Ruggles's money to smuggle him out of his Central American country before the North Gulf Cartel could hunt him down. After he was smuggled to South America, the criminals betrayed him and demanded that he give up the rest of his money. Out of spite, Enrique tossed the duffel bag of money over an adjacent cliff. As a result the men shot at him and hit his abdomen, but the boy escaped. In the countryside of Peru, Enrique was profusely bleeding and thought he was going to die. After collapsing on the ground, the young girl Mayte and her dog found him there, startling him. He woke up in her house and was treated and fed by the girl and her grandmother Casilda. Setting up a shipment shop and becoming acquainted with his saviors, Enrique learned about how almost everyone in the country opposed the concurrent government of President Duarte, whose administration was widely unpopular due to his economic and military policies. The Peruvian military carried out a violent anti-guerrilla campaign and killed Casilda's grandson as well as the boyfriend of Luciana, Mayte's older sister.
Feeling obligated to repay his debt to the family, Enrique helped them out and sold items to the left-wing guerrillas and learned that the country's parliamentary opposition had ties to the CIA. Having had previous history with them, Enrique decided to seek out the CIA's help in order to cement his desire for gaining power. Accordingly, he became the point of contact between the guerrillas and the opposition coalition, which was headed by Farias Cordero of Popular Action (AP). At the same time, he aided Luciana and fellow left-wing guerrillas by warring against the military, eventually using a nearby town as the base for the guerrillas.[3]
In one instance, Enrique paid off a low-ranking soldier in the military to tip off his superiors about one of the guerrillas' hideouts. Before the military conducted the raid, he planted a bomb in the residence as a trap for them. At night during the raid, he helped the guerrillas escape as the military unit was killed in the attack. Seeing the building explosion from afar, Enrique admitted that he was surprised the military took the bait, insulting the country's military as a poor quality one. The impressed Luciana asked him how he knew the military would conduct a raid, to which he repeated that the country's military was of poor quality, adding that it was easy to pay off their soldiers. She complimented him for being very reliable, and he thanked her in turn. At that point, the guerrillas quickly fled the area.
Due to Enrique's successful counterattack, the opposition coalition used the incident as an example of President Duarte's inability to maintain the country's security. In the United States, the American government had also wanted to depose Duarte since he became uncooperative as a U.S. ally. Correspondingly, the U.S. ambassador to Peru requested the CIA's help on behalf of the Peruvian opposition coalition. Coming to South America, Eda and her rookie partner Jaden went to Cordero's office, where Enrique was waiting to meet them. After the CIA agents were briefed on the plan for their organization to assist the left-wing guerrillas in assassinating the president, Enrique left and waited for them to pick him up at a discrete location.
Once Jaden arrived, he walked up to the car and professed that he never thought he would see Eda again in South America of all places. Relaxing in the backseat, Enrique assumed that she would have lots of questions for him but clarified that he would brief her on everything once they arrived at their destination. As she denied having anything to say, the boy began kicking Jaden's seat. Annoyed, he warned Enrique to stop it, complaining that he was not a taxi driver. Noting that the opposition has changed course, Eda asked Enrique if he prodded them into the plan. Noticing Enrique's bafflement, she explained that Cordero seemed like a show-off who would not directly step into the fire himself. Feeling lost, Jaden asked where he needed to go, and Enrique excitedly informed him that they had to continue following the road the entire way for another twenty kilometers.[4]
Soon, the three arrived at Mayte's town which Enrique claimed was like a lifeline for the guerrillas whose stronghold was elsewhere. Bringing Eda and Jaden into a bar, the boy greeted the bartender and rhetorically asked if they should sit in the back. Another customer saw Enrique and asked him when the next shipment would arrive, prompting the latter to remind him that it would arrive in half a month. At another table, a young woman asked Enrique how Casilda was doing and learned that she is all right. Scoffing, Eda rhetorically commented that he seemed popular among the townspeople. Enrique agreed and showed them to their table, telling them to have a drink and wait there because he had to contact his headquarters. As he left, he assured them that the drinks were his treat.
Later, after meeting with the guerrillas, Enrique returned to the bar and was surprised to see Jaden drunk. Confirming to Eda that they reached an agreement, the boy specified that he would take the agents to his headquarters the next day. Eda asked why they could not go that night, reasoning that she did not see any motels in the small town. Enrique answered that they could stay at his place but requested that they help him carry some luggage there, in particular a rocking chair that he purchased for Casilda because her old chair broke. As he entered the residence, Luciana greeted him as she was leaving, specifying that she had to go back to the stronghold for sometime. Agreeing to watch over her grandmother and younger sister, Enrique bid her goodbye and then guided Eda inside. Blushing, the boy gave Mayte some dog food for her pet mastiff, also informing her of the rocking chair she purchased. The girl reciprocated an expression of shyness and welcomed Eda and Jaden into the house.
Sitting at the table with Enrique, Eda listened to him recount the entire story of how he ended up in Peru after he was shot back in Central America. When he mentioned the populace's grudge against the government and how he became affiliated with the guerrillas, he elaborated that he sought out the CIA's help since they knew what they were doing. Though Eda wondered what his endgame was, Enrique rhetorically asked if they would rather have a government that was easier to deal with than Duarte's. Speaking proudly, Enrique confessed that he wanted the coalition of guerrillas and opposition parties to take power while he built his own organization with their backing. Hearing him admit that he would ally with the CIA if he had to, Eda smirked, prompting Enrique to sternly ask what was wrong. Denying she had any thoughts, she replied that it only sounded like a fantasy a kid would have.
Speaking directly, Eda admitted that she did not dislike Enrique and, on the contrary, appreciated his help. But because she appreciated him, she claimed that she had some advice for him. Eda opined that the government and the criminal underworld might seem the same at first glance, agreeing with Enrique's sentiment that money is power was true at face value. Concerning power, she emphasized that the power within both worlds was entirely different, especially their respective qualities. Reasoning that power was one thing for protection, Eda retorted that a country was not always his friend in times of trouble, especially not the United States that did not tolerate indiscretions. Grinning, she warned Enrique that if he thought he could use the U.S. that easily, then it would cost him a lot of money. Smirking back at her, he replied that he was content with that.
The next morning, Enrique headed out with Eda and Jaden to bring them to the guerrilla stronghold, but not before accepting a lunchbox from Mayte. When he entered the car, Eda teased him for hiding his feelings for Mayte, angering him. To their surprise, Jaden had to stop the car to vomit due to his hangover from only one drink. Immediately, the three of them heard and saw two military helicopters fly toward the guerrilla stronghold, which the military began to destroy with missiles and gunfire. To Enrique's anger, Eda turned the car around since she believed that they had to flee and negotiate with the guerrillas later. As they returned to Casilda's town, Enrique noticed that the military showed up in the town at the same time.[3]
Worried about the attack, he pleaded with Eda to let him go to the village. Holding him back, she angrily reminded him that they would be in the middle of the attack if they went forward. Unconcerned, the boy demanded that she let him go because he had people in town, the same place where he would "build [his] kingdom." Eda told him that he needed to think clearly, to which Enrique told her to shut up and claimed that she could not lecture him like she knew what she was talking about. Annoyed with his stubbornness, Eda let him go and said he could die on his own if he wanted. Warning her not to insult him, Enrique shouted that he would not die. A few minutes later, Enrique hurried to Mayte's place and was shocked to see troops gunning down guerrillas and unarmed civilians around the corner, making him discover that they were not distinguishing between guerrillas and civilians. Outside her place, Casilda and Mayte were pushed to the pavement by a soldier who accused them of actively housing guerrillas.
Seeing them in danger, Enrique sneaked behind and hit the soldier with a tool, yelling at Mayte to run away. As the boy helped Casilda stand, another soldier appeared and shot at them, scaring them. Before the soldier could shoot again, Luciana shot the man in the head and warned her grandmother and sister to run as well. Enrique began to help Casilda up again when he noticed that she had been shot in the left shoulder. Mayte frantically suggested taking her to a doctor, but Enrique noted that the town was still full of soldiers. Though in pain, Casilda advised them to flee without her, but the three adamantly declined to do so. Panicking for a few seconds as to how to aid the injured elder, Enrique came up with an idea and ordered the others to follow him. Returning to the nearby road on the outskirts, Enrique showed himself to Eda and Jaden, who initially thought they were soldiers.
As Enrique and Luciana promised that they intended no hostility and only wanted their help, two soldiers showed up, causing Eda to shoot both men. Several more soldiers showed up as reinforcements, creating a firefight. Hearing Eda say that the car doors were bulletproof, Enrique used the driver door as a shield to take Jaden's pistol to give support to Eda and Luciana. Thanks to their efforts, the three gun wielders defeated the soldiers without receiving injuries. Mayte pleaded with them to get Casilda to a hospital, so Enrique asked Eda and Jaden to help him out. Pointing her rifle at Eda, Luciana threatened to kill her if she refused. Explaining that it was an exchange, she claimed to know a detour up the mountain road, demanding that Eda get them out of town without going through the village. Subsequently, Eda begrudgingly agreed. As Jaden drove, Enrique had to stay in the trunk and complained about it, to which Eda yelled back that their vehicle was already over seating capacity.
On the way, Enrique was disheartened to hear the injured Casilda utter her last words and die in Luciana's arms. Soon, the group stopped on the side of the road to quickly bury the elderly woman. To her protest, Mayte shouted that they could not just bury their grandmother in the ground, with Luciana also opining that she wanted to give Casilda a proper burial. Rhetorically asking if she had a particular place in mind, Eda reasoned that it was better to bury her at that time than to just leave her corpse on the ground. Knocking on the car frame, Enrique pleaded with them to let him out. Climbing out, the boy assured them that he could handle the matter, specifying that there was a safehouse in the area where they could bring Casilda's body and then find a mortician afterward. Addressing Mayte, Enrique asked her if that was okay, and the girl asserted that she would do whatever it took to bury her grandmother. Accordingly, he asked Eda to help him move Casilda into the car trunk.
As they resumed traveling, Enrique asked Luciana about the state of the fort. Recalling what happened, she told him that it ended badly and the fort was burnt to the ground, admitting that was more accurate to say she escaped instead of going in to save him. Angered, Luciana cursed General Tovar for suddenly carrying out his heavy attacks. Unfamiliar with the name, Eda asked who he was. Luciana elaborated that he was a hawkish military general who advocated for crushing the guerrillas at every turn. Enrique additionally stated that Tovar was quiet for a while ever since Duarte took office but he heard rumors that he was approaching the president in recent times. Having a new plan, Jaden drove the car to the city so that he and Eda could report the crackdown to the American embassy as soon as possible in order for a proper response to be formed. When they arrived in the city, the five noticed the traffic and were surprised to see a roadblock up ahead, where several soldiers ordered them to stop the car.[5]
To Enrique's surprise, Eda and Luciana suddenly forced Jaden to drive through the roadblock when they began shooting at the soldiers. Being in the middle of the car seats, the boy ducked to take cover as the military and the women exchanged gunfire, with the group successfully escaping. Soon, they took shelter at Enrique's hideout, where Jaden called the U.S. ambassador and learned that President Duarte was carrying out a self-coup to illegally stay in power. After the call, Enrique was confused because he believed a coup was usually done by the military against a president. Eda specified that it was a self-coup in which the president declared martial law and used the military to suppress opposition by force. With the new situation, she clarified that she brought them as far as promised but they were on their own for the time being until she contacted the embassy for further instructions. Displeased, Enrique and Luciana pointed their guns at the two CIA agents, surprising them. Eda warned him that he should stop, but Enrique reasoned that because the situation has drastically changed, the CIA was their only lifeline and thus one of them needed to stay.
Subsequently, Enrique ordered Eda to stay while lending Jaden his motorbike to go to the CIA safehouse and ask for instructions from a contact. Once Jaden left, he took Mayte to a funeral home and managed to secure a burial site for Casilda from the funeral director. They returned to the hideout and learned from Jaden that their new plan was to flee to the eastern part of the country and cross the border for brief refuge. Upon learning that the CIA needed him to be protected since he was a witness to the Duarte administration's crimes, Enrique responded that he and his two friends had conditions. Eda told her partner that they would need a guide anyway, so Jaden advised the other three to prepare for departure.
After preparing his supplies, Enrique called a business client and iterated that he did not have a choice, so he suggested returning to business when things calmed down. After hanging up, he heard Eda tease him for the delayed business, annoying him. Pulling out a cigarette, she stated that it was indeed wise to halt business for the time being, reasoning that he could not sell things in his situation anyway. Hearing Eda chastise him for his alleged greed, the frustrated Enrique exclaimed that he has survived up to their current point with his own strength. He in turn criticized her and Jaden for looking down on him and posited that they only had strength because they had power as Americans. Adding that they happened to be born in the U.S., Enrique yelled that he was a human being just like them. Though Eda continued to roll her eyes at him, he accused them of using their country's authority to poke fun at the weak, storming out of the room after insulting them as punks.[6]
Afterward, the dissidents departed in Luciana's van to the mountains to circumvent the military's checkpoints in the urban areas. Pulling out a map, Enrique noted that the hidden road was only known to the locals and was not on the map at all. Accordingly, he advised Luciana to drive as discreetly as possible, annoying her enough to claim she did not need to be told twice. Immediately up ahead, Eda pointed out a military vehicle going in the opposite direction of them. Because Luciana sped past them, the two soldiers turned their vehicle around and began pursuing them. As the soldiers began opening fire on the van, Eda peered out of the back passenger window and fired at them, causing the pursuers to veer off to the side into a tank truck, which exploded and killed them. As a result of the attack, Luciana argued with Eda about bringing attention to them, making Enrique plead with them to stop since it was not an appropriate time to fight amongst themselves. The boy asked "Jay" if they still had any pursuers on their tail. Jaden guessed that the military might be cleaning up the explosion aftermath or possibly gave up, causing Enrique, Eda and Luciana to insult him as being naïve, making him quiet down.
Although they were en route to the mountain path, Enrique posited that they could not rest yet since they needed to make as much distance as possible while they still had daylight. As he was baffled about Jaden's tirade of his own life, Celino and another Intelligence Bureau officer rammed their vehicle several times and shot one of their back tires, forcing Luciana's van to violently flip onto its side. The agents then continued firing using their own car as a shield, so Enrique used suppressive fire to cover for Mayte. He was annoyed at Eda and Luciana's makeshift plan to steal the enemy's car, but he nonetheless agreed to cover for them, advising them to attack in opposite directions so that they could commence a three-sided attack. Enrique and Jaden shoot from the front and manage to pin down the intelligence officers. When Celino pulled out a grenade, Eda shot his arm before he could throw it, prompting the enemy to flee as the grenade exploded seconds later, decimating the enemy's car.[7]
Since both vehicles were destroyed, the five of them had no choice but to continue their journey on foot, gathering their remaining supplies from Luciana's van. Whereas Jaden was eager to hike up the mountains, Enrique and the others were continuously tired of the walking and were frustrated with him ordering them to keep up with his pace. That night, they ascended high up in the mountains and set up camp. When Luciana reveals that she brought a bottle of alcohol with her, Enrique shouted that he wanted one, much to Mayte's worry. After drinking some, he ranted about how he would not let the president stop him from building his kingdom in the country, vomiting a bit afterward. Taking him to the lake to clean off his vomit, Mayte tried to console him as Enrique complained that the CIA agents looked down upon him because he was a child. Speaking up, Mayte confessed that she was worried about him. To his surprise, she began to cry and professed that she did not want to lose anyone else, as she had already lost her parents, brother and her grandmother. Mayte admitted that if something happened to him or her sister, she would not be able to bear it.
Speechless, Enrique hugged her and said that he bore responsibility for not being able to save her grandmother, stating that he could not regret it even if he wanted to. The boy proclaimed that he would repay his debts to Casilda and promised to do everything to get Mayte to a safe place. As he assured Mayte that they would live in peace after the turmoil, Víbora suddenly appeared, pushed Enrique away, and grabbed Mayte, who screamed. Although disoriented by Luciana's wooden plank hitting his head, the hunter counterattacked and disarmed her, breaking one of her arms. Víbora again attempted to grab Luciana's head but Enrique jumped onto his head to attack him. Not fazed by the boy's attacks, the hunter slammed Enrique on his back onto the ground and kicked him in the head. Nearby, he then noticed Luciana standing up with her knife again despite her injury. Breaking her other arm, Víbora caught it and shoved it into her chest, fatally wounding her and shocking Enrique. Enraged, the boy shot at the hunter's accomplices Lobbe and José.[8]
Still injured, Enrique stood up upon seeing Víbora grabbing Mayte once more, grabbing a sharp rock and thrusting it into the man's thigh. Though the hunter let go of Mayte, Víbora threw Enrique against the ground a second time and stomped on his head several times, beating him up within an inch of his life. As he walked toward the boy with a rock to kill him, the terrified but infuriated Mayte grabbed a pistol near her and shot him in the right eye and the chest several times, causing the large man to stumble into the adjacent lake. Because they were in a hurry to evade the likely possibility of reinforcements, the dissidents had to leave behind the slain Luciana, so Mayte helped the injured Enrique walk away from the area. That morning, after Eda left the forest to make a call in the adjacent town, Enrique woke up to Jaden asking him how he felt. The boy hid his tears and apologized to Mayte for not saving Luciana, though she assured him that her death was not his fault.
To Jaden's hesitancy, Enrique stood up and was sternly warned that he should be resting. He reminded the CIA agent that he would need a car to cross the border anyway, offering to retrieve one for the time being. He asked Mayte for his gun back and apologized for what she had to go through, promising that he would make sure she would never have to shoot someone again. As Enrique prepared to leave, Jaden stopped him and demanded that they all go together. Once he retrieved a truck, Enrique sat in the cargo bed as Jaden drove into the town to save Eda from being surrounded by Melgar and his intelligence officers. His suppressive fire allowed Eda to jump into the back with him. However, as their truck began to race out of the city, the surviving Víbora stood in front of the car as it sped toward him.[9]
As the hunter pushed back against their truck, Enrique tried shooting at him but was immediately disarmed by Víbora, who lunged forward and pinned him onto the cargo bed. After thwarting one of Eda's attacks, the hunter continuously punched Enrique, making the latter think that he was going to die. Defending him, Eda tried and failed to hit Víbora with a plank, so Enrique used the opportunity to crawl away and grab his pistols. Exchanging blows, the female CIA agent knocked Víbora back, allowing Enrique and Mayte to jointly shoot Víbora, who fell out of the truck's back onto one of the pursuing cars. After Jaden took a side road, the dissidents stopped for a break and then continued to the border. On the way, Mayte asked Enrique if he was all right, reminding him that he was beat up very bad. Eda jokingly stated that they both screwed up, irking Enrique. He looked up at Mayte and asked her to give the gun to him, but she responded that she would hold onto it. Trying to get up, Enrique assured her that she did not need to use it, but Mayte excitedly retorted that she could fight since she "defeated the monster twice."
Chuckling, Eda agreed that she could fight, making Enrique tell her to shut up. Enrique pleaded with the girl to reconsider using firearms, admitting that he could not live with himself if something happened to her given that he felt responsible for the deaths of Luciana and her grandmother. Assuring him that he would not have to worry about that, Mayte affirmed that she also wanted to avenge her sister and grandmother. She held up the gun and confidently asserted that she could achieve her goal, worrying Enrique. He moved to the front passenger seat and confided in Jaden that he felt uneasy about Mayte's wish to defend herself because they supposedly lacked enough power, adding he wanted to be a sufficient prince to a "princess" like Mayte. Up ahead near the border, to everyone's shock, several military vehicles blocked their path while one soldier shot at them, forcing the dissidents to surrender. Whereas Enrique begrudgingly agreed with Eda's idea to surrender for the time being, Mayte was furious at the idea of giving up.[10]
Being surprised once again, the group witnessed a couple of missiles fly at the military trucks, wiping out the battalion. A helicopter descended with Amber Whinberry reaching out to them and urging them to hurry up. Once he climbed in, Enrique attempted to help Mayte up, but Víbora reappeared and tried to bring Mayte down. He warned Jaden that Víbora was gradually tearing Mayte's arm off, so Eda came to their aid and aimed her gun at the hunter. With the attacker letting go of Mayte to attack Eda and Amber, Enrique and Jaden helped Mayte into the helicopter. As soon as Víbora was blinded by Amber's flashbang, Enrique and the others used the opportunity to shoot him simultaneously, forcing him out of the helicopter via a long fall. Later that day as the helicopter traveled across the country, Enrique and Mayte were resting when Amber asked if he was the trump card she had heard about. Irked, the boy asked what they wanted to use him for, causing Amber to claim he was a "cocky brat."
Even more annoyed, Enrique guessed that they seemed to be doing what they always did as CIA agents, but she cut him off and rhetorically asked why he was jumping to conclusions about his savior. Seeing that he was confused, the impatient Amber claimed that he and the girl had no position to be in their helicopter and normally would be dead without their help. Eda advised her not to be so uptight, but the latter asserted that the CIA did not owe the children a single thing, adding that they were supposed to make all of the country's troubles "disappear," including him. She relayed to them that Eda proposed the idea of using Enrique along with the request for help, recalling that she was told Enrique was still valuable as an intermediary to the opposition coalition.
During the meeting between the CIA and Duarte, Enrique waited with Mayte outside the presidential hall. The coming night, Enrique and everyone else returned to his hideout to eat. As he was disappointed about no longer having the influence which he had earlier, he wondered where Mayte was. Though Eda and Jaden thought she went to the bathroom, Enrique that she was gone and quickly ran outside to her, wondering what she was doing. Though Enrique assured her that the deal with the CIA was merely a way to get the government to listen to the people, Mayte shouted back in frustration and asked why they risked their lives if the outcome was dependent on the U.S.'s mood. Calming down, she reminded him that he was a foreigner to her land, accusing him of caring more about his own business and position than their lives. Surprised, Enrique rebuffed the accusation and repeated that he put up with all of the chaos for her sake, but he stopped talking when Mayte continued to glare at him. Enrique suddenly noticed Eda standing behind him as Mayte solemnly stated that commoners like herself would be crushed just like her grandmother if they did not take up arms and fight.
Claiming that she realized why her sister and brother fought so hard, Mayte reasoned that she could not simply go along with the decision to make everyone's actions and sacrifices in vain. Baffled, Eda only told her that she did not believe exploiting the government meant disrespecting her family. Infuriated, Mayte drew her pistol and pointed it at Eda, who was unfazed by the action whereas Enrique blocked her line of sight and pleaded with the girl to sheath her weapon. Urging the CIA agent to stop as well, Enrique told Mayte that she did not have to do something meaningless after surviving their tribulations. Though she glared at him, Mayte reluctantly lowered her gun and affirmed that she would disappear, muttering that Enrique would not have to put up with her or stay where he did not want to be. The girl bid him farewell and thanked him for everything he had done thus far. Enrique pleaded with her not to go, but Mayte ran away alone, disappearing from their sight. After she left, Enrique laid back on his car hood and lamented that he let his kingdom slip through his fingers. Jaden expressed his sympathies, but Enrique told his deceased older brother that even if the CIA helped him out, he was all alone again.[11]
