Little King of The South[]
When President Duarte continued to become unpopular due to his failing economic plan, austerity measures and repressive military campaign, the opposition coalition in the parliament wanted him out of power. Accordingly, as head of the opposition, Cordero led the charge against the president by secretly allying with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. Additionally, the country's leftist guerrilla movement learned of the alliance and were willing to help the opposition coalition. Enrique Gasol, who had settled in Peru and set up business sometime after fleeing Central America, likewise learned of the CIA connection from the guerrillas, who were some of his customers. In due time, Cordero was contacted by Enrique, who was previously a CIA informant, and was pleased that he would serve as the point of contact between the coalition, the CIA, and the guerrillas. On his own end, he kept in contact with the CIA by meeting with Jaden often at his political party's main office. Cordero and the opposition concocted a plan wherein the leftist guerrillas would assassinate President Duarte while having no connection to the opposition.
The diplomats at the U.S. embassy approved of the opposition's cooperation with the United States because Duarte had become uncooperative with them. Subsequently, the American ambassador Alcock requested that the CIA provide direct internal support to the opposition, so Eda and Jaden left the embassy to be briefed by Cordero of the plan. At his office, Cordero grinned and welcomed Jaden, also joking that he was amazed that a beautiful woman liked Eda was a CIA agent. Admitting that he was honored to work with them, he sat down and openly told them about their goal to assassinate the president, shocking the two agents. They believed that he was joking, but Cordero was undeterred and elaborated that the CIA could loophole their legal obligation to not assassinate world leaders by acting behind the scenes and providing military support for a coup d'état by the military. Concerned about his idea, Jaden reminded him that they were in the 1990s and the Cold War was long over, mentioning that there was no way such a violent method would go unnoticed.
Confused, Cordero rhetorically questioned what the CIA's purpose even was in his country. He assured Jaden that the assassination would be carried out by left-wing guerrillas, pleading with him to give financial and weapons support to the opposition. Worried at the revelation, the CIA agent asked what had happened since last time, to which Cordero bluntly answered that the change in policy was due to their country reaching bankruptcy if they played it easy any longer. Reasoning that they had to take some risks to prevent it, he asserted that the coalition had made up their minds. Eda stated that she understood his intentions but wondered how they were in contact with the guerrillas. Snapping his fingers, Cordero ordered Enrique to come in, introducing him as the bridge between the coalition and the guerrillas Afterward, the two agents and Enrique left Cordero.[1]
About a day later during President Duarte's self-coup, the president ordered Melgar of the Intelligence Bureau to find explicit evidence that the CIA agents in their country were connected to the guerrillas.[2] As a result, the military surrounded the Popular Action office and forced everyone in the building and nearby area to surrender. Entering the office, Melgar restrained and beat up Cordero to interrogate him, so the latter was forced to confess what he knew.[3] It is unknown if he is still alive after the interrogation.
