Garcia Fernando Lovelace (ガルシア・フェルナンド・ラブレス Garushia Ferunando Raburesu) is the only son of Diego Lovelace and heir to the Lovelace family line, and as such, is its current head, the twelfth in succession after his father.
Appearance[]
Garcia is a young boy with a skinny build, pale skin, brown eyes, and short blond hair and bangs. He is 137.9 centimeters tall (or 4'6").[1] He wears a light-blue polo shirt with a light-yellow collar, in addition to light-tan shorts above the knee and black shoes. In "El Baile de la muerte," Garcia wears a pomp and power-colored suit coat and shorts above the knee, a white dress shirt, a light-yellow necktie, black long socks, and black shoes.
Personality[]
Garcia appears as a shrewd and confident boy who shows much loyalty to his servitors and Diego Lovelace. He takes much pride in his family name. Initially, he had immature qualities like a tendency to pout. After his father's passing, Garcia became more solemn in his demeanor. He reasoned that he had to act like an adult and needed to stop moping and accept that things sometimes would not go his way in order to run his estate and take care of those closest to him, particularly Roberta. In like manner, he treats his maids Roberta and Fabiola Iglesias as if they were family, and the two women in turn treat Garcia equally good.
History[]
In 1990-1991 when Rosarita Cisneros left FARC,[2] she took refuge in the Lovelace estate, donning a maid outfit and becoming one of the family's staff members under the name Roberta. Garcia is greatly cared for by Roberta and she spends much time with the boy, such as playing games with him, practicing arm-wrestling, and serving him food and drinks. That same year, Garcia's mother died.[3] Garcia enjoys the company of the Lovelace family dog Lazarus (Lazlo in the English dub), which the family got in 1989.
Rasta Blasta[]
When the Manisarera Cartel tried to intimidate Diego Lovelace into selling his land and plantation to them, Diego refused their threat without fear. Infuriated, the cartel decided to abduct Garcia as revenge and transported the boy across the Pacific Ocean using the Lagoon Company as the shipper. Upon learning of his son's kidnapping, Diego was hesitant to send his only servant Roberta to rescue Garcia, but he eventually permitted her to search for him, so she began killing people once again in order to find out where the cartel took her young master.[4] Meanwhile on the Black Lagoon, Revy was in charge of babysitting Garcia, who threw food at her and angered her. Rock then took over watching Garcia, who also threw food at Rock. The Japanese businessman politely asked the young child to stop throwing food at him, adding that he did understand Garcia's anger since he aided in trafficking the boy. Garcia remarked that Rock seemed different from the Black Lagoon's other members, but the ex-salaryman replied that he was really just a criminal-in-training.
Garcia told Rock that he was a member of the Lovelace family, making Rock think that he was lying. When Garcia demonstrated that he knew specific details about the family, including the family dog's name and breed as well as knowledge on rare earth metals, Rock started to believe him and became suspicious of the cartel since they lied about the boy's history. Rock relayed the information to Dutch, who decided to call Balalaika to ask her to obtain background on the Manisarera Cartel. When the Lagoon Company arrived in Roanapur, Garcia told them that Roberta was going to save him and that she was even stronger than Revy, making her laugh. As the four pirates talked to the boy, Roberta was in the Yellow Flag and began a gunfight with the cartel members who heard of her presence, shocking Garcia and the Lagoon Company alike.[3]
The Lagoon Company forced Garcia to hide under a table with them as Roberta and the cartel members shot at each other. In the midst of the chaos, Dutch decided that they would leave the boy behind since the job was too risky at that point. When they tried to leave, Bao yelled at Revy in particular, garnering Roberta's attention toward the Lagoon Company. Revy instinctively pointed her pistol at Garcia's head, threatening Roberta that she would kill the young boy. Roberta carefully contemplated the situation and stated the Lovelace family creed, which Garcia recognized. Revy was forced to let the boy go since Roberta began shooting at her, with Revy receiving a concussion from Roberta successfully landing a blow on her. Garcia continued to cry and could not believe that Roberta was the type of person who would kill people, telling Rock to take him with them. Roberta was surprised by Garcia's comment as Rock took the boy out of the bar, momentarily freezing in place. Immediately after Roberta blew up the bar, Garcia was escorted into Benny's car, so Roberta pursued them. When Roberta eventually latched onto the car with a trench knife, Garcia pleaded with the pirates not to shoot her.[2]
To his fright, Dutch shot at her and said that it would take more than bullets to kill a skilled assassin like her. In the chaotic chase, Benny's car crashed at the Roanapur port. Garcia watched nearby as Revy and Roberta began a firefight until soldiers of Hotel Moscow interfered, Balalaika among them. The Russian head forcibly disarmed the two women and showed Roberta the cartel's branch leader, adding that Roberta had no reason to continue her hunt since the cartel's base in Venezuela was destroyed and Garcia was safe. When Balalaika referred to Roberta as a "bloodhound," this confused Garcia. Against Roberta's wishes, she briefed him about Roberta's terrorist past as a FARC guerrilla, and Roberta confirmed the stories, even referring to herself as a bloodhound. Garcia pounded on her chest, tearfully asking her not to call herself a bloodhound. The maid promised that she would stop her killings, but not before Revy wanted to engage in a fistfight to settle their quarrel.
Roberta asked the young master if he was okay with the fight, to which Garcia enthusiastically encouraged her to win against Revy. After the fistfight eventually ended in a draw, Balalaika ordered Boris to drive Garcia and Roberta to the airport so that they could fly back to Venezuela. Before the car left, Roberta asked Garcia to retrieve her glasses not because they were real glasses but because the accessory helped her maintain her warmhearted maid persona for Garcia. The boy happily got the glasses and then left Roanapur with her.[5]
El Baile de la muerte / Roberta's Blood Trail[]
Sometime later, the estate's mine became financially stable, so Garcia's father Diego decided to increase the amount of employees to help out. Because Fabiola Iglesias was distantly related to one of Diego's farmhands, she was able to work for the Lovelace family using her familial connection as another maid alongside Roberta.[6] In August 1996 (or October 1995 in the anime), Diego Lovelace was accidentally murdered in a controlled explosion at a political rally in Barinas State, Venezuela. Garcia's life drastically changed and he became the twelfth head of the Lovelace family. At his father's funeral, he cried into Roberta's chest, asking her if Diego did anything wrong to be killed. Also saddened, Roberta consoled Garcia by telling him that Diego had nothing to fear in the face of God.[7] Although it was reported that a member of a right-wing militia was arrested for the bombing, members of the Venezuelan military sympathetic to the MVR visited the Lovelace estate to tell Garcia and Roberta about 6 conspirators with Western ties involved in the bombing. With this little bit of information and the men's pictures, Roberta secretly left the Lovelace estate to track down the conspirators and find the true culprits behind the bombing which led her to travel to Roanapur.
Learning of Roberta's leave due to her revenge, Garcia went to Roanapur with Fabiola Iglesias, who came along to protect her master. When the two children arrived in Roanapur, Garcia stayed in the luxurious local hotel Sankan Palace Hotel and wanted to hire Rock to help him track Roberta. Accordingly, Garcia sent Fabiola through town to retrieve the Lagoon Company on his behalf. After her gunfight against the Colombians at the Yellow Flag, Fabiola explained her travels to the Lagoon Company, who drove her back to Sankan Palace Hotel. In Garcia's hotel room, Mister Chang of the Hong Kong Triad had also arrived to speak with Garcia, angering Fabiola. The young maid tried to attack Chang, who easily disarmed her. Garcia assured Fabiola that Chang was only there to talk, so she reluctantly backed off but warned her master that the local townspeople were morally bankrupt.
Garcia then explained to everyone the murder of his father and Roberta's subsequent hunt for those responsible, showing them a photograph of U.S. and Venezuelan nationals that was given to him by the MVR sympathizers. When Chang remarked that Roberta's tracking abilities truly matched her bloodhound nickname, Garcia angrily slammed his fists onto the table and sternly requested Chang to refrain from calling her "bloodhound" again, so the Triad boss calmly apologized. Once elaborating upon Marcos José Lucientes and Simon Dickens's murders, he continued to explain that a maid-clad woman was seen leaving the burning building where Dickens's corpse had been disposed of, as well as Roberta buying a bus and plane ticket to go from Venezuela to Thailand and from the airport to Roanapur. Concluding, Garcia concluded that he only wanted to bring Roberta back to Venezuela with him since he did not want her seeking revenge on his father's killers, as he was heavily pained by Roberta engaging in murder. Although he did summon the whole Lagoon Company, Garcia asked for Rock in particular, surprising him.[8]
After the meeting, Garcia and Fabiola accompanied Rock and Revy across town to gather information on Roberta's whereabouts and activities. They first went to see Bao, who told them about the various businesses that Roberta visited on his recommendation. While there outside the destroyed bar, the brothel women surrounded Garcia and were impressed by the boy's appearance and clothing. As he blushed from the adult attention, Fabiola pulled her giddy master away so that they could continue their search. In midday, Garcia and Rock failed to find the businesses open, so they went to a market at sunset to eat at an outdoor dining place. As Rock asked about Fabiola's background, Garcia remembered that Fabiola grew up in Venezuela's barrios. When Rock mentioned Fabiola's fighting skills and she kicked him in response, the confused Garcia asked her what Rock was speaking of. Embarrassed, the young maid confessed that she had learned capoeira to decrease her need to use a gun, however to her surprise Garcia found her skills impressive and her reasoning noble.
Giving them advice, Benny disagreed and recommended that Fabiola should not hesitate to shoot and kill, but Garcia replied that such advice would get them into trouble. Deciding to leave, Benny told Garcia that he and Fabiola would have to stay at Chang's yacht house for the remainder of their stay per the Triad's recommendation.[6] The next morning, Garcia was sleeping on the couch when Fabiola saw him asleep, so she tried out the swimming pool outside. As Revy found Fabiola and teased her, Fabiola was mortified to see Garcia and Rock nearby discovering her enjoying herself as well. On the way to their destinations, Fabiola apologized to Garcia in the car for swimming behind his back, but he assured that she did not have to hide her desires from him.[9] That day after successfully visiting Praiyachat and Tou Chi's places, the group found out about Roberta taking the Lovelace family's musket as well as Richie Leroy giving her shelter, so on behalf of Garcia, Revy found Leroy and got information from him.[10]
Upon learning of Roberta's hiding place, Rock drove the group to the approximate area, but before they began their pursuit, Revy used a telephone to call for extra help from Shenhua, Frederica Sawyer and Lotton. When Revy asked Garcia what he would offer, he tried to offer as much as Shenhua wanted, but Fabiola pushed his head back to interrupt him and instead offer 6 thousand. Once Revy and Shenhua negotiated the price, the latter got her two roommates to come with her.[11] As they headed to the location where Roberta took refuge, Roberta began her revenge against the Grey Fox soldiers, dismaying Garcia. As the soldiers managed to make their escape, Rock stayed in the car and told Garcia that he would stick with the boy to the end if he wanted to see it through. Thinking about it for some seconds, Garcia declared that he was going, so he exited the car with the mercenaries while Shenhua complimented his chivalry.[12]
While trying to find her, he and the others came across FARC soldiers who were sent to kill Roberta, accordingly killing most of them while Garcia kept his distance from the bloodshed.[13] One soldier was left alive, so Fabiola spoke with him in Spanish to ask about his pursuit and Roberta's mental state. After Fabiola promised that she would call medical help for him and relayed the information to Revy, the latter woman instead killed the soldier, discomforting Garcia but shocking Fabiola. The young maid angrily pointed her gun at Revy, berating her for killing a wounded soldier. Interrupting the girl, Shenhua pointed her kukri toward Fabiola, telling the young girl that she wanted to stick to the job. Garcia stood between the two women, stating that they needed to hurry and find Roberta. Before they continued onward, the boy told Fabiola that he understood her perspective and also wanted her and Roberta to return home safely.[14]
At nighttime, Garcia's group fought more FARC guerrillas, but Garcia got separated from them when he was spotted by FARC soldiers. On the other side of the gunfire, he yelled to Fabiola to help the others while he searched for Roberta. Inside the empty building, Garcia came across an empty bottle of stimulant pills, recognizing it as the medication that Doctor Hartland provided to Roberta. After killing other FARC soldiers, Roberta tried to fight Alberto Camarasa but was easily disarmed and pinned down. Garcia, hiding nearby, grabbed a crowbar to prepare physically confronting Camarasa. The Cuban man then elaborated to Roberta that he did not want to kill her but instead re-recruit her for FARC due to her superhuman skill, stating that she could help revive and train the leftist guerrillas. Roberta, feigning friendliness, agreed to work for Camarasa, even saying that she did not care about what could happen to Garcia anymore. As Garcia was shocked by her mental state and words, he heard them tongue-kissing each other, causing him to bite his thumb hard enough to make it bleed.
Whereas Garcia tried to think happy thoughts about Roberta, she attempted to seduce Camarasa further to distract him, soon managing to fire a bullet into Camarasa's abdomen using a secret chamber in her belt buckle as she undressed. Camarasa tried to grab his pistol but Roberta kicked it away and began bludgeoning him to death with her fists, killing him and frightening Garcia, who was watching the whole ordeal. Garcia cried and then fainted, making Roberta see his presence. Realizing that she accidentally allowed her master to see her kill someone, Roberta let out a loud scream, giving her position away to everyone nearby. Roberta cried while begging Garcia to wake up, and her hallucination of a Japanese man whom she killed years ago appeared once more. Losing sanity regarding which people were real or fake, Roberta thought that the frozen Garcia was just another hallucination, pointing a pistol at his head.[15]
When some Grey Fox soldiers saw that Roberta was going to kill the boy, Master Sergeant Horner and Staff Sergeant Burroughs shot at her to move her away from the boy while Horner grabbed him, with Sergeant Major Sanchez tossing a smoke grenade in the area so that they could exit the building.[16] Outside the building, Garcia woke up and was terrified, so Horner put him down. The soldiers' leader Major Shane Caxton assured the boy that they would prioritize his safety, but Garcia remained scared and speechless. Horner tried to calm down the frightened Garcia by offering him water, but Sanchez interrupted and joked that Horner was not good at talking with children, so Sanchez talked to Garcia in Spanish. As the soldiers planned their next move, Garcia then recognized Caxton as the same soldier in the photograph that the Venezuelan military showed him, realizing that he and his men were directly involved in killing his father.[17]
Furious with the soldiers, Garcia grabbed a nearby pistol on the ground. When Sanchez saw the boy point the gun toward Caxton, Sanchez quickly drew his pistol toward Garcia, but Horner jumped forward and disarmed the child before Sanchez could shoot. The various soldiers were surprised by the boy's action, and Garcia in tears told them that he knew they were in Barinas, Venezuela and killed his father. When Caxton found out about Garcia's connection to Diego's unintended civilian casualty, he accepted responsibility for Diego's murder and offered his own pistol to the boy. The Grey Fox soldiers demanded Caxton not to let him have the weapon, but Caxton told them to stand down. When Caxton advised the boy that he had to think hard and decide for himself, Garcia remembered his own father telling him the same thing when he told him to understand other people's perspectives.[18]
Although Garcia decided he could not go through with taking revenge on Caxton, Roberta jumped down to attack Caxton with her guns, but the troops shot back and Horner shielded Garcia to prevent Roberta's gunfire from accidentally killing him. Garcia got up and told the troops not to kill her since her mental state was due to Grey Fox's killing of his father.[19] After the Vysotniki pushed Roberta back, Shenhua and Revy wanted to kill the Grey Fox soldiers and take Garcia, but Hotel Moscow snipers shot them in the arm to deter them from engaging any further. Caxton and his troops started escorting themselves out of Roanapur, so Garcia then reunited with Fabiola, who assured Shenhua and Revy that they would get their payment when the Lovelace affiliates returned to Venezuela.[20]
While the U.S. troops began to leave the city for carrying out their operation in the Golden Triangle, Garcia and Fabiola returned to Chang's yacht house one last time. Before Garcia left the yacht house, Fabiola saw him at the pool there to tell him that the transportation headed for the airport was ready. The boy then laughed and dragged Fabiola into the pool with him, confusing her.[21] As Garcia teasingly started a splash fight, she grabbed him and politely told him to calm down. Garcia assured her that he was happy, surprising her. He told her that he knew she was a bit on edge after seeing Roberta in her deteriorating state of mind. As they continued to stand in the water, Garcia talked about how his father's death affected both his and Roberta's worlds, wanting her to seek peace. When the young boy asserted to Fabiola that he intended on saving Roberta before returning to Venezuela, she replied that she would follow him to the end, adding that they would help Roberta escape the "dance of death" that people danced in Roanapur.[22]
In a short amount of time, Fabiola and Garcia then boarded Dutch's boat to find Roberta, who would follow the Grey Fox troops that later boarded the Black Lagoon along the Mekong River. On the deck, Rock told Garcia about his idea to convince Roberta to stop her revenge, and he reluctantly agreed after Rock told him only part of the plan.[23] Afterward, Caxton climbed onto the deck to converse with Garcia, who told Caxton that despite his help, he could still not forgive him for his father's murder. The boy added that he recognized Caxton as a noble soldier but said that he, like Roberta, continued to use death and violence to achieve their goals. Garcia finished by saying that he needed Roberta to get out of the "dance of death" by ironically using Caxton's help to do so.[24]
As the troops arrived in the Golden Triangle in the pitch black jungle, Garcia and Fabiola demanded to accompany Caxton's team, and even though he initially rejected their request, he allowed them to stay with him. Disembarking, Garcia followed Caxton while other teams surveilled the jungle.[25] As soon as the troops got deeper into the jungle near Shue Yan's camp, Roberta began her rampage on the soldiers, killing several of them. When Caxton's men pleaded with him to gain his permission to retaliate against Roberta, Caxton remained silent, and Fabiola pulled her gun on him and asked the major if he would side with justice. Looking at the solemn Garcia, Caxton looked into the boy's eyes, and Garcia confidently proclaimed that he would save Roberta.[26] Carrying out Garcia's idea, Caxton radioed Roberta to cease her attacks and hand over Shue Yan in exchange for his own surrender, but Roberta refused until Garcia radioed to her to meet with him. Agreeing angrily, Roberta came out and saw Garcia, Fabiola, and the unarmed Caxton standing far from her. Roberta yelled that she would finish her revenge by killing Caxton, but before she could fire her gun, Garcia pulled out his own pistol and shot Caxton in the chest, terrifying her. She denied that her beloved Garcia would kill anyone, and the young boy told his maid that he wanted her to stop her revenge.[27]
The head maid continued to deny Garcia's request, reasoning that Garcia actually did want revenge. To snap her out of her loss of sanity, Garcia shot her with a fake bullet to show she was not dreaming, causing Roberta to shoot Garcia as well, with her bullet only grazing his kidney. She screamed in terror seeing that she shot her master, but Garcia ran up to her and kissed her, making her blush. He then told her that everything was okay and that she needed to end the "dance of death" that Roanapur reinforced in her. Caxton then woke up, showing that the bullet that hit him was a fake, albeit remarking that the force felt real. Angry, Roberta pulled out her pistol and asked why Caxton was still alive, but Fabiola stood in front of Roberta's line of sight to calm her down.
Garcia ordered Roberta to put down her gun, remarking that he shot Caxton with a fake bullet. Finally calmed, Roberta hugged Garcia and responded that he had truly grown up. Examining him, Cyrus reported that Garcia would be fine but still needed medical treatment, so the Grey Fox soldiers prepared to help Garcia and Roberta leave. Disappointed, Raymond McDougal pointed his rifle at Roberta, telling Caxton that they could not just let Roberta leave after she killed many of their comrades. Before he could shoot the maid, Caxton shot McDougal first, killing him much to Garcia and everyone's surprise. Afterward, Roberta helped Garcia onto Dutch's boat, where Rock saw them and was glad that his fake bullet plan worked, causing Fabiola to shoot him with a fake bullet. She accused the ex-salaryman of exploiting her master by gambling on his life, but Rock replied that she and Garcia had won.
Hearing his answer, Garcia told Rock that he truly was a resident of Roanapur, shocking him. Finally, the boy stood next to Roberta while Fabiola bid Rock farewell, telling him that he could continue dancing with the dead while she, Roberta and Garcia went back to Venezuela.[28] Back home, Garcia stood at Roberta's side when she prepared to make amends with the family of someone that she killed. In the anime, Garcia witnessed Roberta rise from her wheelchair since Roberta sustained graver injuries in the OVA than in the manga.[27]
