Greenback Jane is the sixteenth episode of the Black Lagoon anime and the fourth episode of Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage. It originally aired in Japan on October 24, 2006.

Summary[]

A fugitive counterfeiter named Jane arrives at the Hooligan Church, hoping to find shelter. When the bullets start flying, prayer probably will not help—but Revy and Eda might.

Plot[]

At night, somewhere in Roanapur, Elvis and several Nuevo Laredo Cartel gangsters confront Jane in her residence. Elvis accuses her of being selfish in her work, clarifying that he likes good work but nevertheless prefers that it be done within a time limit. Looking at one of her own counterfeit U.S. dollar bills, Jane responds that he just does not understand her work, calling her own bill incomplete. Retorting that they are not trying to trick the U.S. Mint, Elvis remarks that she and her partner Theo are the only ones in the room who seem to be focused on stalling the work. He also reminds her that she has gone $200,000 over budget in addition to the original promised deadline being two months ago. Overhearing Elvis state that his bosses think that Jane is messing with them, Theo becomes nervous upon seeing him fiddle with his pistol, prompting Jane to assure him that they are okay. Signaling one of his men to point their gun at Jane, Elvis jokes that he could never injure a woman, and the other gangster shoots Theo in the head, shocking Jane. Outside, hearing the gunshot, Lobos is annoyed that he will have to clean up the mess.

Traumatized, Jane frantically wonders why they shot Theo, but Elvis angrily interrupts her and orders her to have a final product finished within 48 hours or else she will suffer. The next day, at her place, Revy wakes up and feels the heat, complaining about it and looking at the floor to remember how much she drank the previous night. Suddenly, the broken air conditioner falls off the wall, frustrating her due to the hot day. Meanwhile, Jane begins using her computer to work on improving her model of counterfeited bills while two gangsters sit outside her room to prevent her from leaving. Playing a card game, one man loses to José and is disappointed, so he decides to take a restroom break. Once the man enters the bathroom, Jane gets up and quickly ties the bathroom door knob with a computer cord. Exiting the room, she takes José by surprise and bashes his head with the computer, knocking him down. Jane escapes from the building and flees with a bag of luggage, and she is off put by the shady atmosphere of Roanapur as she discreetly walks through town.

Inside the Rip-Off Church chapel, Revy and Eda sit at the altar and discuss what type of firearm Jesus Christ would have used. Whereas Revy guesses that Jesus would have used a Jericho pistol on the basis that he would allegedly use an Israeli-made gun, Eda shows her Glock 17L and posits that he would use her own weapon instead. Resting her head down while exhausted, Revy responds that she would have never come to the chapel had she known that the A/C was broken. Continuing to fan herself to cool down, Eda asks Revy about Rock, but the latter only comments that she is annoyed that he will not get rid of his business attire for almost a year since he joined Lagoon Company. Scoffing at the topic, Eda specifies that she wants to know whether or not the two of them had sexual intercourse yet. Hearing her refuse to answer, the nun chastises her for acting very serious. Nearby, as several cars pursue her, Jane runs to the Rip-Off Church and knocks on the chapel door, yelling for help.

Although initially refusing to open the door, Eda slams it open and sternly informs Jane that they are closed. Pleading with the nun to give her refuge, Jane says that she is not a native to the town and cannot trust anybody. Rejecting her request, Eda tells her that she can come back on Judgment Day. At that point, Elvis arrives with his men as he shoots at the chapel door as a warning, infuriating Eda and Revy. Stepping out of the car, Elvis orders Jane to come with him and stop running away. Worried, Lobos advises Elvis to put his gun away since he is not accustomed to the culture of Roanapur, but the latter ignores him and tells Eda that he merely has business with the runaway woman. Running to the chapel entrance, Revy tosses the Glock 17L to Eda, and both women begin to shoot at the gangsters in retaliation for damaging the church building. The gangsters quickly take cover but are unable to fight back against the continuous gunfire. Elvis orders his men to fire, but Lobos shouts at them to stay put.

Coming to the women's aid, the apprentice priest Rico arrives with an M60 machine gun and assures his "sis" that he will help, causing Eda to warn him to call her "Sister" instead. As he prepares his ammunition, Rico smilingly introduces himself to Revy as Lobos pleads with the women to cease fire. When the women stop shooting, Lobos claims that the situation is all a misunderstanding, but the women do not buy the excuse and resume shooting, insulting him as well. At the altar, Sister Yolanda finds the alcohol that Eda has drank. Yelling at Eda, the elderly nun scolds her for drinking inside the chapel. Nonetheless, Yolanda declares that they will talk later and pulls out her golden Desert Eagle, joking that they will deal with the "non-believers the same way as the people of Beth Shemesh." Accordingly, Revy, Eda, Rico and Yolanda fire a barrage of bullets at the gangsters, forcing them to retreat, but not before Elvis curses the women and threatens to make mincemeat out of them next time. Sighing, Yolanda assesses that it will be a huge cost to pay for the ammunition used and repairs to the chapel. Looking at the confused Jane, the elderly nun demands that she come inside the church and explain herself.

Sitting at the end of the aisleway, Jane elaborates that the gangsters are with the Nuevo Laredo Cartel, an organization that works directly for the Florida-based Girolamo Famiglia. She adds that she was hired by the cartel to fabricate old U.S. dollar bills out of circulation, claiming that her counterfeiting team which she leads is based all over the world and communicates via the Internet. Smoking a cigarette, Yolanda asks her what she did to end up angering the cartel. Rebuffing the accusation of messing up, Jane instead accuses the cartel members of lacking patience with her work. The counterfeiter then begins to talk about the Swiss-made printing press she was provided as well as the steps of properly counterfeiting paper currency, a long explanation which tires out Revy and Eda. Interrupting her, Eda asks when her story ends. Noticing their boredom, Jane gives two counterfeit bills to the women and encourages them to guess which one is the best fake. Smugly smiling, Revy assumes that the bill in her right hand is ideal because of the threads, but Jane, reciprocating Revy's smugness, states that no Federal Reserve Bank Seal on a U.S. bill uses the letter "M" at all.

Though she acknowledges that her work is credible, Yolanda asks about the point of her story. Jane answers that she passed the cartel's deadline but refused to compromise in order to perfect her final product. In response, the cartel killed Theo, her data manager from Germany, resulting in her work slowing down from lacking a skilled group member. Viewing the matter as that of breaking a contract, Revy and Eda agree that Jane is at fault, angering her. The counterfeiter criticizes them for not being in her shoes, even accusing them of spending all day of watching NYPD Blue. Pointing her pistol at Jane, Revy sternly comments that she actually watches The Oprah Winfrey Show, scaring her. Proclaiming that the young woman has been guided to the church by the Lord, Yolanda informs her that Revy is an escape specialist who would easily help her escape Roanapur with the counterfeiting plates as payment, adding that she would not mind helping her out too. Jane offers $30,000 for the plates separate from her escape expenses, an offer which the nun turns down. Eda also rejects the offer by citing a Bible verse.

Deciding that she does not need the criminals' help, Jane nonetheless thanks them for their time and prepares to leave. Offering some advice, Eda tells her that her best bet of refuge in town is the Ramsap Inn by the Chalquam Market, advising her to tell them that the Rip-Off Church sent her. In turn, Jane takes the advice and leaves a $300 tip in the donation tray, exiting the chapel. Grinning, Yolanda commends Eda for keeping an eye on the "money tree that grows gold." Seeing Eda make a phone call, the confused Revy demands to know what they are planning, and Eda calls Leroy to tip him off about the Indian woman's whereabouts in exchange for a fee. In the hospital, recovering from his injuries, Elvis is pleased to learn that Jane's whereabouts are known, deciding that he will send Russell to find the girl instead of Lobos. Cursing Roanapur and its gun-wielding residents, Elvis demands that Jane be brought back to him so that he can return to "civilized Florida" as soon as possible. Confidently asserting that he will carry out his wishes, "Groovy Guy" Russell assures his boss that he will be watching the Caribbean sunset in three days with Don Girolamo himself.

Nighttime soon approaches, and Jane finally acquires a room at Ramsap Inn. At the same time, at the Yellow Flag, Revy sits at the counter with Eda and angrily insists that Eda let her in on the plan. Playing with her glass, the nun jokes that they have to be patient in order for their prize to be won. Outside the bar, several mercenaries arrive and head inside. Tipping Bao for the drink, Eda tells Revy to come along, knowing that Rock has prepared his car for them. As the two women leave, Revy slightly shoves Russell as she exits, irking him. Looking around, Russell asks for the people whom Lobos hired. Quentin the Tiger replies that everyone at the tables are the freelancers, so Russell gathers at his table and shows them a photograph of Jane. He explicates that each person will get $1,000 for the job after capturing the woman alive at the Ramsap Inn. Annoyed by his bossy attitude, Shenhua retorts that she and the others only accepted the cheap job due to their free time. Agreeing with her, Quentin insults his bossy manner and his cowboy appearance, angering him.

Speaking with an electrolarynx, a goth woman says that everything will be fine once the newcomers are introduced. When the other bounty hunters do not recognize her, the woman reminds Shenhua that she, Sawyer the Cleaner, did a job for her the previous Tuesday. In a flashback, at her workplace, Sawyer washes her hands when Shenhua arrives with a suitcase, apologizing for being late. Opening the suitcase to reveal a tied-up and terrified man, the Taiwanese assassin elucidates that Mister Chang wants to make an example out of the man, adding that the cleaner can either chop up or mince the man. After she leaves, Sawyer powers up her chainsaw and prepares to dispose of the man. Back in the present, the bounty hunters are all shocked that she is Sawyer the Cleaner, noting that she is always seen wearing her personal protective equipment. Pointing to another table, the goth woman claims that two men over there are newcomers.

Lotton and Claude "Torch" Weaver introduce themselves and respectively confess that they drink milk because of personal preference and religious reasons. Lotton shows his Mauser M712 pistol, and Claude demonstrates his flamethrower by damaging a headlight, scaring the freelancers. Russell is agitated, but the bounty hunters ignore him and depart from the bar, having the cowboy pay for their drinks. Elsewhere, near the Ramsap Inn, Rock parks the car as he and Revy wonder what exactly they need to do. Relaxing in the backseat, Eda responds that they merely have to wait. In her motel room, Jane lays on her back and falls asleep on her bed, unaware that a wide assortment of bounty hunters intend on capturing her.

Differences from the manga[]

  • In the manga, the "Greenback Jane" arc takes place after "Fujiyama Gangsta Paradise." In the anime, in contrast, "Greenback Jane" takes place before the "Fujiyama Gangsta Paradise" arc.
  • Lobos's presence and frustration during the beginning scene where Elvis kills Theo is anime-only.
  • The early scene of an exhausted Revy in her residence and seeing her broken air conditioning is exclusive to the anime.
  • The scenes of Jane's escape where she knocks out one guard with her computer, escapes the building, and runs through town are only in the anime.
  • At the end of the firefight outside the church, Rico holds his machine gun behind both shoulders in the manga. In the anime, he only stares at Jane without the heavy firearm hoisted behind his shoulders.
  • In the anime, only the chapel door is damaged during the firefight. In the manga, the back row pews near the chapel entrance are also damaged like the door.
  • In the manga, Russell is already at the Yellow Flag talking to the bounty hunters when Eda and Revy decide to leave. In the anime, Russell arrives just as the two women leave.

Trivia[]

  • In the Japanese version, Eda rejects Jane's search for refuge by citing John 5 in the New Testament. In the English dub, Eda instead cites Luke 11:7.
