Greenback Jane Part 1, also called Chapter 38, is the thirty-ninth chapter of the Black Lagoon manga. It was originally released in November 2005.
Plot[]
Jane argues with Elvis about the quality of their most recent version of counterfeit U.S. dollar bills. Impatient with her due to being 2 months behind schedule and Jane wasting money for perfectionist reasons, Elvis jokes that he will never put his gun against a woman, so he shoots and kills her assistant Theo, shocking her. He then tells her that she has 48 hours to show him some results and he leaves. Inside the Rip-Off Church chapel, Eda and Revy discuss what type of firearm that Jesus Christ would carry, and Eda asks Revy how her trip to Japan was and if she had sexual intercourse with Rock there. Refusing to answer the question to Eda's annoyance, Revy then laments that she should have gone to the Maplao market with Rock.
Running to the chapel, Jane knocks on the door and pleads for refuge, but Eda tells her that they are closed for the day. When Jane continues knocking and yelling loudly, Revy and Eda play rock-paper-scissors to decide who will answer. Pushing open the door, Eda again tells Jane to go away, citing a Bible verse and saying that God is on vacation. Jane responds that she could not go to the police in Roanapur due to their lack of trustworthiness, and Eda clarifies that her church is not the altruistic kind. Just then, a bullet hits the chapel door, angering Eda. Exiting from the car with other men, Elvis orders Jane to come along quietly and tells Eda that he has business with Jane, but his fellow gangster Lobos advises him that he cannot just do what he wants in the city.
Running angrily to the entrance, Revy tosses Eda her pistol, and the two women begin shooting at the thugs, scaring them and forcing them to take cover. As the women open fire, Ricardo arrives and tells Eda that he will help, introducing himself to Revy as "Rico." Lobos pleads with Eda and Revy to stop, and although the two women briefly stop shooting, they only become more angry and continue firing more rounds. Seeing the alcohol on the altar, Sister Yolanda berates Eda for drinking inside the chapel but remarks that she will reprimand her later, pulling out a Desert Eagle pistol and aiding the three. Outmatched, Lobos orders his men to flee and an angry Elvis is dragged away with them.
When the men leave, Yolanda is displeased with the damage to the chapel door, telling Jane that she needs to explain herself. Inside the chapel, the four sit in the pews as Jane explains that she is a counterfeiter for the Nuevo Laredo Cartel, a crime syndicate of the Florida-based Girolamo Famiglia. Jane then explains in excruciating detail the perfect method to create counterfeit bills, annoying Revy and Eda, who ask her if she has a point. Jane proves that the two women cannot spot the difference between her fake bill and a more obviously fake bill, but Revy points her gun at Jane when the latter criticizes them for not understanding her reason for fleeing the cartel. Interrupting them, Yolanda assures Jane that the Lagoon Company and the Rip-Off Church can provide her safe passage out of Roanapur in exchange for her money plates, but Jane's offer of $30,000 turns off Yolanda.
Deciding to leave, Jane thanks them for her help, but Eda advises her to stay at the Ramsap Inn in a specific room for the most discreet refuge. Once Jane puts a $300 donation in the collection bowl and departs, Yolanda commends Eda for luring Jane into their plan, confusing Revy. Calling Leroy on a cell phone, Eda states to the informant that she can sell him the information concerning the Indian girl's whereabouts to give to the Mexican gangsters.
