- Not to be confused with Jake Chambers.
Jake (ジェイク Jeiku), also known by his online alias Ultimate Cool J. (アルティメット・クール・J Arutimetto Kūru Jei), was a Los Angeles-based rapper and gunman who only appeared as a character in the Black Lagoon light novel Shaitane Badi.
Appearance[]
Jake was a young man of American nationality with a skinny build, short dark hair, and a chin beard. He wore VonZipper sunglasses, a New Era cap, a Phat Farm parka and shorts, and Nike Air Max sneakers.[1] In addition, he donned various jewelry, including multiple silver ear piercings, gold chain necklaces, golden wrist jewelry, and several rings on his fingers.
Shaitane Badi history[]
Jake ran a website called Deadly Biz, with the front page showing the message, "A seesaw game of life and death played on a razor's edge. That's the Ultimate Cool style." Below the site's logo was a photograph of Jake's customized automatic pistol, and the website served as a journal for Jake's killings, posting photographs from his pistol camera of corpses and people that he shot. In addition, his website featured shopping links to bullets and firearms, earning a commission from the sellers.[2]
Chapter 1[]
The redheaded Jane hired several people, including Jake, Stanislav Kandinsky, Caroline Morgan and her 8 pirates, and Shadow Falcon, to board the Black Lagoon as transport so that they could attack the Hong Kong Triad Zaltzman tanker. While Dutch (who did not know that the tanker belonged to the Triad) steered the Black Lagoon to track the ship, Jake and the others took refuge in the cramped-up hold of the Lagoon Company boat. Inside, Rock and Revy had to keep an eye on them as Caroline gleefully explained her family history to Jake, who was interested in her swashbuckling pirate life. Jake asked her to prove her lineage, so Caroline showed him her saber with Henry Morgan's name carved onto it, with Jake then asking if she should be swinging the sword around instead of having it in a museum.
During Caroline's answers to Jake's questions, Caroline looked at Revy, who gave her a mean glare. Jake interrupted the glare by asking Caroline why she was on their current job, and she replied that she decided to do pirating elsewhere until pirating became easier in the Caribbean, where she originally tried to attack drug runners. Revy grew more tired of the conversation, and Jake finally asked her where her ship was, given that she was a pirate. Caroline explained that her helmsman came down with syphilis, and she herself could only steer ships that had sails on them, not modern GPS and radar ships. When Jake asked her if she could just hire someone else, Caroline added that she could not find many helmsmen who could speak English, and Jake sarcastically responded that maybe it was her dress code, finally growing tired of her talk as well.
Ending their conversation, Jake looked at Revy and tried to flirt with her, but Revy told them to shut up, surprising Caroline since she thought Revy (a Chinese American) could not speak English. As Revy angrily dismissed Jake's endeavors, he asked her about her dual Cutlass pistols and remarked that he wanted to see them, but Revy told him to buzz off. He grinned and then pulled out his own customized .45 Colt pistol and pointed it at Revy, catching her off guard. As Jake was proudly explaining his gun's features, Caroline recognized his customized gun, realizing that Jake was Ultimate Cool J., the owner of the Deadly Biz website. Jake was flattered by her excitement as well as her remark that she checked his website every day. Excited by his gun, Caroline then asked Revy to show her gun to everyone.
Accordingly, Revy nonchalantly pulled out her gun and pressed it against Jake's forehead, warning him not to joke around. Still calm despite a gun at his forehead, Jake pulled out a business card and offered it to her, advising her to go to the URL. Revy turned down the card, then Rock shyly interrupted to inform them that they were almost at their destination. As Revy told everyone to exit the hold, Jake leered at her before exiting the room. In the pitch black of night in the Indonesian seas, Jake got onto the Zodiac boats that the assault team brought on board, and he and the others traveled to the oil tanker in pre-planned positions.
Soon, the assault team boarded the ship's deck, and Stanislav stationed himself onto the tanker's top mast, killing several men but not Mister Chang, who arrived on helicopter minutes ago and who was Jake's real target. When Stanislav told his group that they were changing plans due to the Lagoon Company now siding with the Triad tanker, Jake told him to leave Revy alive since he wanted to kill her. Although Stanislav had the opportunity to kill the ascending Revy, he agreed to Jake's request, pleasing him. Nearby, Caroline got onto the ship and led her pirate men aboard, speaking like an old-fashioned pirate caricature. On the deck, a crew member ran out of a door right in sight of the intruders, freezing in shock. When Caroline demanded that he hand over some treasure, Jake simply shot the man in the stomach, shocking Caroline.
In a loss for words, she wondered why Jake killed an unarmed man, and he replied that their mission was to kill Mister Chang, elaborating that the ship did not have any goods onboard. Caroline, thinking to herself that she would not have accepted the job if she knew that killing someone was part of the mission, began to berate Jake for senselessly killing someone, but he interrupted her by immediately shooting her right between the eyes, instantly killing her. Caroline's pirate crew was shocked, however Jake told them that they could join him or run away, so the pirates disrobed their pirate gear and were glad to stop the charade and begin killing. With Caroline's now ex-pirate role-players now allied with him, Jake then shot around the adjacent corner since Revy appeared, but the Lagoon gunslinger took cover.
Nonetheless, Revy fighting them solo succeeded in pushing Jake's group all the way to the tanker's engine room. Jake enjoyed the fighting and managed to get some pictures of Revy using the tiny camera attached to the top of his pistol. The rapper continued to taunt Revy while he hid from her sights, and soon Chang showed up to aid Revy, with the two expert gunslingers shooting at his hiding place. Jake, running out of the room and knowing that he was outmatched, yelled to Stanislav that they had to abort their mission, so Stanislav told him that he would use his rifle to cover the rapper's escape. Unfortunately for the assault team, only four men survived and fled, leaving Mister Chang and the Lagoon Company alive.[1]
Chapter 2[]
Returning to Roanapur, Jane had her hired mercenaries stay at the Sankan Palace Hotel. The four survivors, including Stanislav, Jake, and Alonzo and Pedro, returned to the hotel after a failed attempt to assassinate Mister Chang. In the lobby where Jake was waiting for Jane to arrive with a car, he used his laptop to transfer cell phone files to his computer.
A couple bodyguards from Hotel Moscow recognized Stanislav and came up to him and spoke in Russian. Stanislav was surprised just as they were since they thought that he was dead, and they told Stanislav that his former captain Pavlovna set up business in Roanapur. Although Stanislav denied familiarity with them, the Russian-speaking men gave him a Bougainvillea Trade Company business card if he wanted to contact them. After the men left the hotel lobby, Jake recognized the company name, telling Stanislav that he researched the company and discovered that was the Russian mafia's front in Roanapur. Although the men were impatient to wait for a car, Jake already had a hideout prepared in the city.[3]
Chapter 3[]
Back at the Lagoon Company residence, Rock showed Jake's business card to Benny, so Benny decided to check out Jake's Deadly Biz website on his PC. While observing the site, Benny noticed that the most recent post had a picture of Revy photoshopped to give her long eyelashes and bigger breasts, with Jake adding commentary about wanting to violently rape her. Upon seeing the post and comments, Revy shot one bullet at the screen, now even more determined to kill Jake. In her anger, Chang called her to tell her that she would accompany Shenhua to go to the mercenaries' hideout so that Revy could deal with the assassins to prevent his own men from fighting them.
While Jake and the others stayed at their new factory hideout, Alonzo, being a lookout, radioed to Jake that one of the people that pulled up in the enemy car was Revy, grabbing his attention. When Alonzo did not respond on the transceiver's end, Jake thought that Pedro was in on the plan, but Pedro reminded him that he did not know about Roanapur until the day of the assassination plot, making Jake put away his gun. The rapper then tried to wake up Stanislav from his heroin-induced trip, but the sniper could only decide to leave the place and barely understood Jake's words. Not hesitating at all, Revy entered the factory and was met with gunfire from Pedro, who used Stan's Dragunov rifle.
Pedro covered Jake while the latter taunted Revy like last time, with the two exchanging insults as both took their respective cover. Tired of Jake's foolish ranting, Revy ran to another spot for cover in order to deduce the sniper's position so that Jake's cover would be gone. Soon, she made one perfect shot and killed Pedro, shocking Jake and causing him to flee. Revy shot a few bullets onto the ground in front of him, becoming the real tantalizer. When push came to shove, Jake was terrified to continue a disadvantaged one-on-one fight with Revy, but Shadow Falcon stepped in and helped him escape as the ninja disarmed Revy and fled as well.[2]
Chapter 4[]
After Revy had returned from the fight to the Lagoon Company office, she convinced Benny to hack Jake's website so that she could mess with him. Meanwhile, in room 509 at the Lafette Roanapur Hotel, Tatiana Yakovleva, disguised as the contractor "Jane," let Jake enter the room, and he asked her where Stan was. She replied that he was resting in the room, and they were interrupted by a knock on the balcony door, seeing that Shadow Falcon arrived and let him in. While Falcon rested against a wall, Jake argued with Jane about the now-high risk of attacking Chang, but Tatiana mocked him, asking him if the great Ultimate Cool J. was scared.
Jake denied being scared and berated Jane for having a suspicious plan, and Jane denied that she set him and the other hired hitmen up. Solely focused on killing Revy instead of Chang, Jake told her that he quit. Before leaving the room, the Los Angeles rapper asked Falcon what he planned on doing, and Falcon replied that he would strike down Chang with his blade.[4]
Chapter 5[]
Jake, now staying in the Tokaīna Hotel, woke up the next morning and thought about what he would do to Revy while he ate his breakfast. After eating, he opened his laptop to check his website once again, and he became confused upon seeing that his latest post was that day, thinking it must have been a mistake. At that moment, his heart began to sank seeing that there was an image of Revy wearing dominatrix gear and tying up a large, overweight man holding a gun that looked similar to Jake's pistol. Accompanying the post was a caption posing as Jake and degrading and insulting himself, with the comments below talking about their disappointment in Jake's (alleged) true appearance.
Because his website login credentials were changed and his attempt to use a sock puppet to deny the veracity of the photograph failed to convince his fans, he closed his laptop, now in despair due to his cool persona being murdered. He exited the hotel and ran through the adjacent market, eventually arriving at a cemetery on Roanapur's outskirts. Looking at the tombstones surrounding him, he then heard Revy's recognizable voice insulting him. Terrified and stressed out, he asked her if she was going to kill him, and Revy told him that he could draw first, encouraging a duel. Jake cried that he did not want to fight since no one would remember him, but Revy continued to take pleasure in knowing that he had suffered. With no choice, Jake tried to pull out his pistol, which had heavy weight due to the customization, and Revy's lighter gun emerged faster, fatally shooting Jake and bringing his fear to a deathly halt.[5]
