History[]
El Baile de la muerte / Roberta's Blood Trail[]
In 1969 in the Quảng Trị province of Vietnam,[1] Larkin and his unit massacred an entire Vietnamese village, leaving one young girl alive. During the massacre, Larkin scavenged the houses for loot and stole the currency that he had found. Exiting one of the houses, he even offered to let Raymond McDougal rape the surviving, lone Vietnamese girl first. The unit's leading soldier, lieutenant Shane Caxton, refused to let Larkin and his men harm the girl in any way and shielded her. Larkin justified slaughtering the village by telling him that the massacred villagers were allegedly sympathizers of the National Liberation Front, but Caxton retorted that he was a scumbag who used war as an excuse to be a villain.
Consequently, the two men prepared to draw their guns in a duel, with Larkin taunting Caxton by likening him to the Lone Ranger. When the former pulled out his gun, the latter shot him first, injuring him. Irritated, Larkin furiously commanded his other officers to also kill Caxton, reasoning that they could make his murder look like a KIA in the war zone. The only soldier not to follow that order was Raymond, who in fact helped Caxton shoot Larkin to protect the girl, intimidating the other soldiers from firing back.[2]
Two and a half decades later during Grey Fox's covert operation in Southeast Asia, Caxton had a nightmare about the incident and remarked that Roanapur reminded him of Saigon.[3] Raymond later told Caxton that the latter saving the child from Larkin that day taught the former to always save non-combatants no matter the circumstances, even if they were outnumbered.[2]
