Le Majeur (ルマジュール Rumajūru) is a former member of Les Cinq Doigts, a five-member unit of France's Service d'Action Civique (SAC). One mission she had as a member was to go to Roanapur and hunt down a man called "La Mouche." Her name is French for "middle finger," also being her code name in Les Cinq Doigts.

Appearance[]

Majeur is a young Japanese woman of French nationality with a skinny build, pale skin, and short black hair in two rabbit-style twin tails. She wears a bullet-resistant black pantsuit. Later on, her left eye was shot by one of her comrades, resulting in her wearing a white medical eyepatch over her left socket onward from that incident. On her back and upper biceps, she has a large tattoo with a design related to the kabuki play Aoto Zōshi Hana no Nishikie.[1]

Personality[]

In general, Majeur has a modest personality, feeling greatly indebted to friends and others who help her. When her friend, the first L'auriculaire, dies, Majeur feels resentful over her death, blaming Le Pouce for it and not letting the subject go.[2] Majeur also has a tranquil demeanor about her, not being scared of criminals in Roanapur who interrogated her as well as calmly listening to music occasionally. She takes care of her physical health, specifically rejecting the use of both cigarettes and drugs due to the bodily harm from both.[3][4]

Le Majeur seems to have a sister complex, as it is implied the first L'auriculaire was similar to her biological sister, leading to Majeur's attachment to her.[5] She quickly starts to bond with Revy after getting captured and calls her "sis" from that point on. She is greatly fond of music and likes to listen to Japanese pop songs and Western songs, such as Japanese TV openings[6] as well as the song "Easy" by the Commodores.[4]

History[]

At some point in her life, Majeur moved from Japan to France for unexplained reasons.[6] As a member of Les Cinq Doigts (French for "five fingers"), she got the code name "Le Majeur" for "middle finger" since she is one of the five fingers, the other four members being named after the other four human fingers: Le Pouce, L'index, L'annulaire, and L'auriculaire. In Majeur's initial missions, she deeply cared for the first L'auriculaire in particular, which was seen as a weakness by other group members. When Les Cinq Doigts fled Nigeria after their operation's failure resulted in the first L'auriculaire's death, a new woman took the latter's place, becoming the second L'auriculaire. As time went on briefly, Le Majeur blamed the death of the first L'auriculaire on Le Pouce, who viewed her death as an unavoidable sacrifice due to their soldier life.[2][5] Soon after her death, SAC's network pinpoints La Mouche's likely location to Roanapur in Thailand, so the five women head there.

L'homme sombre[]

In Roanapur, Majeur and her four comrades arrived, then looking for any Black man that matched La Mouche's description. They relaxed at a fight club ran by Ronnie the Jaws, and Majeur listened to some music. While Le Pouce assured her group that her intel should be correct this time, Majeur was skeptical, which stemmed from their botched operation in Nigeria. When the fight ring referee asked the crowd if anyone wanted to volunteer to fight the champion Somsak after he defeated Kittikhun, Majeur volunteered, much to the anger of the ring's crowd who were betting on Somsak's victory. When Majeur dodged the fighter's punches and knocked him out, the crowd was furious, causing two henchmen to take Majeur to the arena office. In the office, Majeur was quiet while the Black promoter interrogated her, and she only asked him his height and if he was familiar with several African names associated with the events that took place on September 18, 1989 in Burkina Faso since he matched the physical description. When Majeur's friends entered the room, the promoter ordered his men to kill them, but the women quickly drew their guns, killing the henchmen except the promoter to interrogate him further.[7]

Elsewhere at a later time, L'auriculaire accidentally killed another Black man prematurely, remarking that they had killed 5 people so far. Majeur listened to L'annulaire comment that she needed to give the men a chance to talk, to which L'auriculaire responded that she genuinely tried to make him talk. When Le Pouce told the group that they had to be patient, Majeur advised that they called for extra help from the Réseau since bad intelligence would get one of them killed again.[8] Le Pouce replied that the first L'auriculaire had to make a sacrifice, angering Majeur enough to draw her weapon on her. When the other three women also drew to discourage Majeur from shooting, Le Pouce reminded her that L'auriculaire voluntarily saved them because their squad was exposed. Seconds later, Majeur put her pistol away and walked away, sternly stating that was not a good reason to die.[2]

Elsewhere at night, Majeur and the women barged into a building with several drug dealers associated with Hotel Moscow and killed them all, only leaving alive Jinx, a Black man. After they shot him in the knees, Jinx claimed not to know anything about their date or the names, so Majeur prepared to kill him, but men from Hotel Moscow showed up, forcing the women to flee and leaving Jinx alive. After Rock and Revy spoke to Jinx and the former deduced the possible next targets besides Dutch, they went to Isaac's antiques shop to talk to François Modibo since he was possibly a target. As Rock, Revy and Shenhua left, the Frenchwomen showed up and Le Pouce informed the women that she would wait in the car while the other four go inside.[9]

Majeur and co. entered the building, warning Revy to move out of the way since their business was with Modibo. When the pirate refused, the women pulled their guns on them, starting a firefight. During the shooting, L'annulaire demanded that they regroup, causing Revy to yell to Shenhua to capture at least one member. Shenhua wrapped her roped-sword around Majeur's neck, but the latter escaped thanks to L'index's stun grenade disorienting the Taiwanese assassin. Although Revy managed to land a shot on Majeur's back, Majeur's suit protected her and only knocked her to the ground. Seeing Majeur in trouble and as a liability, L'auriculaire prepared her pistol and shot Majeur directly in her left eye as she got back up, incapacitating her. The four women left Majeur behind, with Shenhua noting that she was still alive, and she carried the unconscious woman over her shoulder.[10]

After the firefight, the three took Majeur to the Lagoon Company dry dock's second floor and tied her up and bandaged her eye. Revy asked Rock if they should have brought the woman to Doctor Hartland first to treat her eye, but he responded that she still had several questions to answer. Upon waking up, Majeur's expression turned resentful, and Revy and Rock sat down, with the latter asking her what the significance was concerning the date and names that she mentioned to others. As she refused to cooperate, Rock lighted a cigarette for himself and reminded Majeur that she was a hostage and that they could be friends in order to clean up her mess. Angered, Majeur replied that the Réseau would not stop chasing down La Mouche or forget about Antsirabe, surprising the amused Revy. Upon hearing those terms, Rock said that he had to go out for a bit, suggesting that Revy be gentle with Majeur. Shenhua herself was hungry and decided that she would leave too, sternly telling Majeur that she would get whatever she brought her.

After the Taiwanese assassin left, Revy started smoking a cigarette and asked Majeur what she wanted to do. Still resentful, the Frenchwoman replied that she did not care since she was a hostage, but Revy stated that unlike the various crime syndicates in town, the Lagoon Company did not care whether she lived or died. The pirate even offered her a cigarette, but she rejected it on the basis that smoking would slow her down. Smiling, Revy repeated that she would take her to a doctor for her excruciating pain if she talked, but Majeur retorted that the Réseau would hunt her down. Letting out a puff of smoke, Revy reminded her that her own comrade shot her, remarking that Majeur was still alive and could get revenge. Finally, the pirate claimed that covering for her friends would not grant her an award, warning the assassin to decide soon.[3]

When Shenhua and Rock returned from their trips, the dismayed Majeur agreed to talk, receiving a hamburger from Shenhua. Biting into the burger, she admitted that she worked for France's Service d'Action Civique. Recognizing the name, Rock told Revy that the group was a French militia meant to expand the French-Africa ideology. Confirming, Majeur elaborated that the militia had a unit called Les Cinq Doigts to which she belonged. Rock asked her why her group hunted down Black men, and she replied that they were after "La Mouche," a tall Black man who was a former lieutenant colonel in the Burkinabè Army responsible for procuring and managing funds for the Antsirabe connection. Piecing the intel together from what he learned from Feng Yifei, Rock informed Revy and Shenhua that La Mouche was connected to a failed coup in Burkina Faso whose survivors were trying to reestablish themselves. Because of this possibility, SAC wanted to eliminate the remaining survivors.

Rock thanked Majeur for her information and promised to take her to Doctor Hartland to treat her eye. On the way there, the Frenchwoman sat in the back of the car with Revy and Shenhua. Rock drove them and informed Majeur of her 3 choices that she would have assuming that La Mouche was Dutch: she could return to her comrades and tell them La Mouche's location in order to trap the women and then run away; she could return to them and tell them about the danger they were in but be hunted by Roanapur's crime syndicates; or she could disappear from town but needed to tell Rock where her group's safehouse was. Majeur decided to go with Rock's first choice, so Rock dropped her off at the doctor and drove to the docks with Revy and Shenhua accompanying him.[11]

Later after treating her eye wound, Majeur returned to her safehouse where Les Cinq Doigts resided, feigning forgiveness for abandoning her. All but Le Pouce were skeptical, but Pouce assured them that Majeur was fine and felt glad she was still alive. Accordingly, she briefed them on La Mouche's location via an informant whom she talked to. She clarified Dutch's particular location in three days where he would be exposed, and the women agreed to the date. Three nights later, the women confronted Dutch inside Club Flame Zone, but Balalaika and her Vysotniki surrounded them, beginning a gunfight. The women called for Majeur's help, but she had already ran out of the area, angering L'auriculaire since she was suspicious about Majeur's return.[12]

Le Majeur running away.

After L'annulaire and L'index were killed by the Russian soldiers, L'auriculaire escaped the battle area to find the traitorous woman. Majeur could not find an exit and was spotted by L'auriculaire, and the two shot at each other. When she ran out of bullets, L'auriculaire tossed her pistol at Majeur and disarmed her. The former utilized her knife and angrily hurled punches at the latter, furiously telling her that she knew she would try to betray them at some point. As Majeur was pinned onto the ground, L'auriculaire repeatedly and angrily told her to die while trying to push a knife through her chest. Suddenly, Majeur heard Revy advise her to push her attacker's head upward, and she did so, allowing Revy to shoot L'auriculaire in the back of the head, killing her and splattering her blood on Majeur's face.

Revy smiled and joked to Majeur that she could have ran away by then, but the latter responded that she wanted to see her ex-comrades' deaths for herself. Seeing a trail of blood nearby, Revy remarked that the last Frenchwoman was still alive. Subsequently, the three women followed the trail of blood to see the fatally bleeding Pouce lying down against a wall. Revy and Shenhua stood by as Pouce admitted to Majeur that she knew the whole situation was a trap to begin with but wanted to believe her, angering Majeur enough to shoot her dead upon hearing the comment. With the tension decreased, Revy assured Majeur that she did the right thing. As the women left the building, Majeur remarked that she envied Revy's ability to find solutions, to which she agreed that one should not let nonsense control one's life.[13]

After the bloodbath, Majeur was forced to answer to the Council for her role in the murders of Black men in Roanapur. When the bag over her head was lifted, Ronnie asked if it was a joke since she was just a single woman. Mister Chang subsequently explained to Ronnie the Jaws and Balalaika what Rock told him about her background and betrayal, to which Ronnie replied they should just kill her since she still killed their men. Chang retorted that Balalaika had the final say on Majeur's fate since she lost the most men, and Balalaika reminded the silent and serious Frenchwoman that her French friends killed 2 Vysotniki and wounded six others. Not fazed by Balalaika's glare, Majeur listened to her propose that she would allow her to live on the condition that she became property of Hotel Moscow as a loyal non-member and a shield for the Vysotniki, to which she agreed. Skeptical, Ronnie interrupted and said that Majeur might betray again, but Revy vouched for her, saying that she had enough reason to betray Les Cinq Doigts after losing her eye to them, even volunteering to look after her and dissuade betrayal to Hotel Moscow.

Surprised at Revy's willingness and involvement, Balalaika agreed to the terms. As the meeting adjourned, Majeur learned that she had to get her own food and shelter, to which Revy again stated that she would help her with that. Once being free from her handcuffs, the ex-assassin was surprised by Revy's offer, even calling her "sis." Revy asked her if she was planning on betrayal again, but the latter replied that she would not and was only living to survive. As they left, she thanked the pirate once more, but Revy brushed off her praise. Later the next day at the harbor, Majeur was listening to some music, and Rock and Revy greeted her. She asked Rock if he was Japanese since he recognized the theme song that she listened to, adding that she herself was a Japanese woman who moved to France earlier in life. Rock confirmed, and as Majeur was about to say her real name, he replied that she did not have to admit her real name. Smiling, the two Japanophones conversed in Japanese, annoying Revy since she could not understand the language.[6]

New Girl in the Hood[]

In the morning, Le Majeur knocked on the door at Revy's place to ask Rock if Revy was there. Confirming she was there, the pirate asked Majeur if she was staying at the Ramsap Inn. She replied that she was staying at the Waio'le Motel since it was the least awful place, Revy ordered her not to stay in motels any longer. Immediately, the two sailors departed so that Revy could guide Majeur around town to several businesses that provided services which were vital for survival. As Rock drove them both, Revy first took Majeur to the document counterfeiter Mel, introducing Majeur to him and telling him to give her some passports. When Mel advised that an Armenian passport would be ideal whereas Revy jokingly recommended an American passport, Majeur responded that she did not want anything fancy and would go with an Armenian passport as well as an ATF permit and a Don Mueang International Airport staff I.D. in a Korean-name. Agreeing to make the five requests, Mel informed Majeur that it would cost six thousand dollars.

Afterward, Revy told Majeur that she would put her documents in her escape bag, a bag that one uses if they have to suddenly skip town. When Rock asked what that was, Revy berated him for not knowing, with Majeur commenting that it seemed like common sense. As Rock continued driving them, Majeur interrupted to say that she wanted to stop at Doctor Hartland's place. At the doctor's place, Hartland examined her left eye socket and relayed to her that the procedure to fix the wound went well and that he would prescribe her some medicine. On the way to Praiyachat's place, Majeur remarked that she wanted a Jericho pistol, but Revy replied that government guns sucked, adding that the old man would customize guns to her liking. Going inside, Majeur followed Revy as the latter greeted Praiyachat. Beginning her shopping, Majeur responded to Praiyachat's revolver recommendation that she would not mind but did not like revolvers' little bullet capacity, opting for a pistol.

Majeur joked that she wanted a Beretta pistol, making Revy slightly smile and tell her that they could not have the same gun since she needed a distinctive weapon. Putting a Mitchell Arms Signature pistol on the table, Praiyachat asked Majeur about her liking to the gun, which she agreed, so Praiyachat permitted the women to use the shooting range out back. Firing her first several shots, Majeur managed to hit the practice target, so Revy showed off her ambidextrous skills and hit the targets as well, impressing Majeur. Majeur tried to shoot with two pistols but performed terribly. Upon Majeur's inquiry, Revy answered that being ambidextrous with pistols was something she was skilled with since her childhood, adding that one did not need to use the guns' sights. After their firearm practice, Majeur and Revy were driven by Rock, with Revy informing Majeur that she would have to start working for their company as part of their agreement. Inquiring about her health, Majeur answered that she did not do drugs. Arriving at the Lagoon Company dry dock to meet Dutch, Rock joked about how Dutch would react.[4]

Subsequently, Majeur met Dutch and boarded the Black Lagoon to fulfill Dutch's test of employment. On deck, Revy, in her bikini, asked Majeur if she tied the knot to the Zodiac boat correctly. Majeur showed her the correctly-tied knot, so Revy told her to get ready to swim, and Majeur disrobed to reveal that she had a large tattoo covering her entire back and shoulders, much to the dress shirt-clad Rock's surprise. Revy and Rock both complimented the ink work, and Rock recognized her Japanese words that the tattoo was related to the kabuki play Aoto Zōshi Hana no Nishikie. Pointing to the large Buddha statue in the Roanapur bay, Revy kicked the Zodiac boat into the water and informed Majeur that she would have to swim from the boat to the statue for her test for their next diving job. Beginning her test, Majeur dived into the water and began stroking her arms toward the statue, eventually arriving at the base. Once there, Majeur lied on her back and panted from exhaustion, complaining that she still had to swim back to the boat.

Once swimming back and getting on land, Majeur sat in the back of Benny's car and heard Revy tell her that she passed Dutch's test, relieving her. Claiming that there was a pickup job the next week, Revy also remarked that business was sporadic and they might have to offer jobs instead of accepting them. On the way to their next location, Revy asked Majeur about the boombox that she was carrying with her, and the former assassin stated that she made a mixtape since she figured that they would get tired of the car's radio. Upon Majeur happily playing the tape, Rock recognized the song as a theme song for a drama series by Omega Tribe, and he and Majeur happily sang along to Revy's annoyance. Majeur asked Revy about her distaste for the song, and she answered with a grimace that the words were in Japanese and she could not understand a word. Wanting to cheer her up, Majeur asked Revy to listen to the next song and played it. Revy recognized the song as "Easy" by the Commodores, and she began to happily sing along with Majeur and Rock, creating a joyful atmosphere.

Soon, the three arrived at the Yellow Flag and headed inside to greet Bao, with Revy ordering her usual Bacardi, Majeur ordering a Singha, and Rock ordering a Macallan 12. Slamming down a can of beer, Bao rhetorically asked if Majeur was the lucky survivor of the hunters of Black men, which Revy smilingly confirmed. Although remarking that Balalaika was only feeling charitable, Bao agreed that Majeur had quite the luck. Revy said that Majeur had a hard time finding a job while she was a pawn of Hotel Moscow, asking Bao if he had any jobs for her, to which Bao said that he could always use a bouncer. Majeur agreed and clarified that she could work if Hotel Moscow did not call for her, so Bao said that she could also clean up the place before opening time since his back had been killing him lately. When Majeur recommended that he change the bar's music to something more cheerful, Bao expressed an irked face and remarked that last time he changed the music, another bar fight started.

As they continued talking, Eda, dressed in her casual outfit, walked in and leaned next to Majeur, asking if she was the sole survivor of Les Cinq Doigts. Complimenting Majeur surviving the Vysotniki, Eda commented that she wish she had Majeur's luck. Glaring at Eda, Majeur told her not to be so friendly with her, to which Eda joked to Revy that her friend was not very polite. Asking Eda if she thought she could treat her like a nobody, Majeur calmly threatened to kill Eda, who snidely told the "slant-eye" Majeur that she could try if she liked. Consequently, both women immediately attempted to draw their pistols until Revy slammed her glass onto the table, telling the two that they could settle their quarrel over drinks. Waving her hand to Bao, Revy ordered him to give them several rounds. As the drinks were poured, the two women were told that whoever passed out first would lose. Seeing the drinking contest, several customers giddily shifted their attention onto the contest, but Bao stated that they had to put some money in to watch the spectacle. As several men began betting on Eda and Majeur, Revy served as referee and ordered them to begin, and the two women swung their heads up.[1]

Where the Chips Fall[]

Black Lagoon v13c116

Le Majeur recovering from her hangover.

After the long night, Majeur reconvened with Rock and Revy at the Lagoon Company office while continuing to suffer from a hangover. Being ordered by Balalaika to act as a bouncer at her new casino on Yatchalaya Street, Majeur placed her head down on the table and gloomily hesitated to go. Smiling at her, Revy advised Majeur to be herself so that she could receive lots of tips. Once again, Majeur complained about her job as a bouncer, nonetheless she got dressed into a Playboy Bunny uniform per Balalaika's dress code. At the casino, the strapless-dressed Revy laughed at Majeur's uniform and complimented her tattoo adding to her style. Frustrated with her night, Majeur claimed that at least three people had grabbed her buttocks, asserting that she was not sure how much more she could take. Guiding the two further inside, Majeur in turn complimented Revy's dress, but the Lagoon gunslinger grumbled that the dress was tight. The ex-assassin then stood by as Rock and Revy conversed with Mister Chang and Balalaika, the latter of whom encouraged the two pirates to have fun with the casino's games. Hearing that Revy wanted to play the slot machines, Majeur agreed to guide her to the slots area.[14]
