Eda Initial Stage history[]

At some point in her adult life, she met Maynard Sears, formerly Vasili Skachkov, and married him believing that he was a second-generation Russian immigrant rather than a defector from the Soviet Union.[1] Together they live in the suburbs of Baltimore, Maryland and have one daughter, Lottie.

The Spy Who Came in from Cold[]

On a school day, Lottie's mother was at home in the kitchen when she heard the doorbell ring. Thinking that her husband and daughter had arrived home early, she answered the door but instead saw Yevdokiya Skachkova, Maynard's first daughter from his previous marriage. The latter asked if she was at Maynard Sears's residence, which the mother confirmed and in turn asked how she could help the stranger. As Yevdokiya hesitated to introduce herself, Lottie arrived and called for her mother, who greeted her as she biked to the house. The young girl remarked that her friend Janice was unable to play with her due to an emergency, so she returned home. Seeing Yevdokiya, she sternly asked who the visitor was. Embarrassed, her mother warned her not to be rude, apologizing to Yevdokiya for her daughter's impoliteness. As she advised her daughter to avoid such behavior, two criminals exited their car near the house. Lottie asked if her father had returned home, which her mother confusingly denied.

Her daughter noted that there was a car nearby, puzzling the mother since she did not hear Maynard enter the house. Nonetheless, Lottie asked who the female visitor was, again dismaying the mother. When Yevdokiya tried to introduce herself, one of the two criminals pointed his gun at Lottie's head, telling the three shocked women not to move. Hearing Lottie scream for her, the mother attempted walking forward in distress, but one of the men shot the ground near her feet as a warning shot. The bearded man warned the woman that if she called the police, then Lottie would suffer the consequences. As the mother began to cry out for her daughter, the men ordered her to tell "Vasili" that his three friends said hello, speeding off into their car with the child as their hostage.[2]

Soon, Lottie's mother saw her husband coming home, so she ran up to him in tears, worrying him. She tearfully informed Maynard of Lottie's abduction, shocking him. She asked him who the "three men" were supposed to be, recalling that they called him "Vasili," his original name. When she repeatedly asked what would happen to Lottie, Maynard grabbed her shoulders and pleaded with her to calm down. He explained that he knew who Ives and his men were, assuring her that their target was him and his money. Asking her to calm down again, Maynard added that the men would let their daughter go when they received their money. Though shocked, the mother stopped panting and again wondered where the men were. Maynard asked Eda and her associate if they heard them, but the CIA agent replied that they were no longer in a position to help him, telling him that he was on his own. After they left, the mother was slightly angry and wiped away her tears. She asked her husband if he would tell her everything, which he promised to do.

Subsequently, Maynard relayed to her his history of being a former Soviet embassy security officer who defected from the USSR to the USA in 1985, admitting that he was not a second-generation Russian immigrant. Taking in the new information, the disheartened mother stated that she had been deceived all along, but Maynard rejected the notion of deception. He elaborated that he made the decision to leave his country and past behind to live in the U.S. as Maynard Sears, claiming that Vasili Skachkov was a dead man. Confused and curious, she responded that she did not think it was necessary for him to share the ghosts of his past, but he agreed that it was still unnecessary. Lottie's mother then asked Maynard if their daughter's abductors were Russian men from the former Soviet Union, and he denied it since they were different men, confusing her. She listened to him recall that he received a new name and some money from the U.S. government after his defection. Afterward, he met her and wanted to start a new life, but the payout he received was not enough in the long run, so he needed to acquire some money.

At that point, they heard their telephone ring. Sitting quietly, Lottie's mother heard Maynard exchange harsh words with Ives's men, who wanted a $100,000 ransom payment in exchange for Lottie at Patterson Park that night. Once the call finished, Maynard prepared to leave, but not before his wife inquired about his ex-associates. He explained that the Russian men to whom he promised to do work for on the condition that it was a one-time deal. Learning that he had raided drug dealers' hideouts to steal their money and kill them too, Lottie's mother expressed shock and disbelief at the story, causing Maynard to shout that it was only one time. He clarified that they did not even know his current name and even gave more of the share to him, angrily repeating that it was a one-time relationship. Though unnerved, his wife sternly asked him to promise her one thing, which was to bring Lottie home safe and sound, surprising him.[1]

Later that night, Eda's associate visited Lottie's mother at her house and asked about Yevdokiya. Recognizing the Russian woman in the picture he showed to her, she confirmed that the woman had visited her house just before the moment that Lottie was abducted, making him realize that the FSB defector had visited the residence to target Maynard.[3] In the end, Lottie was returned home to her mother after Maynard, Eda and Yevdokiya fought Ives and his men.[4]
