Luciana (ルシアナ Rushiana) was the elder granddaughter of Casilda and older sister of Mayte. When her boyfriend as well as her older brother and parents were killed by the Peruvian military, she joined the leftist guerrillas of which her partner was a member in order to destroy President Duarte's authoritarian rule.

Appearance[]

Luciana was a young Hispanic woman with a tall build, tan skin, and long black hair. She wore a dark-colored cloth jacket, a light-colored T-shirt, dark jeans, and light-colored shoes. She carried an AK-47 rifle for a weapon.

Personality[]

Luciana had a close bond with all of her family members and particularly with her younger sister, especially after some of her kin were killed by soldiers during the Peruvian military's anti-guerrilla campaign. She believed that birth and upbringing do not matter but rather, it is about where one's soul is born. She additionally thought that people do not belong to their place on earth but instead to the world where one is eventually meant to be in.[1]

Eda Initial Stage history[]

Little King of The South[]

During the Peruvian government's war against the country's left-wing guerrillas, they killed Luciana's brother and parents as well as her boyfriend, with the latter being killed since he was a guerrilla. As a result, Luciana harbored a personal grudge against President Duarte's administration and the military, so she became a guerrilla herself. Some time later, Enrique Gasol arrived in the country from Central America and found refuge in the house of Casilda, Luciana's surviving grandmother. As he recovered, Enrique learned of everyone's gripe with the government due to the many killings, so he decided to help out Luciana and her associates.[2]

During one such incident, Luciana and fellow guerrillas abandoned one of their hideouts in a city after Enrique gave a false tip to a low-ranking soldier that the guerrillas were still in the apartment. On the night of the raid, the troops that raided the building were killed by a bomb inside, making Luciana ecstatic. Impressed with his work, she asked Enrique how he knew they would come, to which he asserted that the Peruvian military was a low-quality one. At that point, the guerrillas fled the scene since the military would cordon off the surrounding area.[3] Some night later, Luciana prepared to leave Casilda's house to return to the guerrilla stronghold away from their town. As she stepped out, Enrique returned with the CIA agents Eda and Jaden, who were assigned to help the opposition coalition aid the guerrillas' plan to assassinate the president. Bidding him goodbye, Luciana requested that he watch over her grandmother and younger sister Mayte while she went back to the stronghold.[2]

The next morning, the military carried out a surprise attack against both Luciana's town and the stronghold. Although the stronghold was destroyed and many guerrillas were killed, she managed to escape alive. When she returned to her house to find her family members, she saw a soldier about to shoot them and Enrique, so she killed the soldier and urged them to hurry to her. However, she was disheartened to discover that Casilda had been shot in the left shoulder and was profusely bleeding. Casilda urged her grandchildren to go on without her, but Luciana declined and wondered how they could possibly bring her grandmother to the city for medical treatment. Having an idea, Enrique encouraged the women to follow him, and he had Luciana agree to surrender her rifle when they came to Eda and Jaden, who were waiting outside of town. As she begrudgingly kept her hands up, Eda spotted a couple of soldiers approaching from behind the guerrilla, so she shot at them. Because more soldiers approached them, the CIA agents and the guerrillas briefly teamed up in a firefight against the soldiers.

After the firefight, Luciana turned her rifle on Eda and warned that she would shoot if she moved or refused her request to have Casilda driven to a hospital. Adding that she knew a mountain route leading to a hospital, the guerrilla yelled at Eda to hurry into the car. In the backseat as Jaden drove, Casilda had already lost a lot of blood and asked her granddaughters to continue getting along. To her grief, her grandmother died on her lap as she uttered her last words. When they stopped by the road up ahead, Eda claimed that they would have to bury the deceased elder next to the road. Frustrated, Luciana agreed with Mayte that she wanted to give Casilda a proper burial, but Eda reasoned that they had no obligation to help further and it would be better than leaving Casilda unburied. Getting out of the car's trunk, Enrique promised that he knew a coroner who could bury Casilda for them, so they kept her corpse in the trunk.

Luciana and co. stuck at a military checkpoint.

Immediately, they resumed traveling while Enrique asked Luciana about the state of the stronghold. Recalling that the area was burnt to the ground, she stated that General Tovar most likely executed the sudden attack. Luciana explained to the CIA agents that Tovar was a hawkish general who had pushed to increase the military's campaign against the guerrillas. Eda repeated that they would have to put her plan of leveraging with them on hold, much to Luciana's chagrin. In the next town, they came across a military checkpoint and were ordered to stop.[4] As Jaden stopped at the checkpoint to inform the soldiers that he was affiliated with the U.S. embassy, Luciana quietly confirmed to Eda that she had her AK rifle ready. Following Eda's signal, Luciana began shooting out of her passenger window while Jaden drove past the checkpoint, killing a couple of soldiers. When a machine gunner pursued them, Luciana and Eda jointly shot the armed soldier, throwing the enemy jeep off of their trail. Afterward, the five of them went to one of Enrique's hideouts for refuge, where they learned that President Duarte had carried out a self-coup along with martial law. Luciana calmly joked that the action was no surprise for a politician who ran on a platform promising to end warlord politics.

Because Eda asserted that she was no longer to help the non-Americans, Luciana and Enrique pointed their guns at her, coercing them into helping them out for the time being. Subsequently, Jaden went out to meet with an American contact for instructions while Luciana forced Eda to stay put in her van outside a funeral home as Enrique and Mayte made an order for Casilda's barrier. As she held her pistol to Eda's seat, she said that she would never let her guard down even if it was only her and her colleague. She admitted that she thought all CIA agents were businessmen like Jaden until she met Eda, whom she insulted as smelling like gunpowder. Grinning, Luciana also claimed that she was just like them, but Eda calmly warned her not to put her in the same league as the guerrillas, asking her if she grew up in a good neighborhood. Luciana answered that birth and upbringing did not matter but rather, it was about where one's soul was born. She concluded that one did not belong to their place on earth but instead to the world where one was eventually meant to be in, but Eda insulted her belief as cliché.

Once Enrique confirmed the future burial site for Eda's grandmother, everyone in the group returned to the hideout. There, Jaden explained the instructions of the embassy to them, which were to secretly cross the border and escape to a neighboring country. He told them that Enrique would need to come with them because he was a living witness to the coalition's relationship with the guerrillas and the military's massacre of civilians. Additionally, Jaden emphasized that they could not let the government get their hands on Enrique, who responded that he and his two friends had conditions. The male agent advised the non-Americans to prepare for departure, so Luciana took a shower. After exiting, she learned from Mayte that Casilda's burial was satisfactory, causing Luciana to comment that they needed to visit the gravesite after things died down. Quietly, Mayte asked what would happen to them. Hugging her younger sister, Luciana solemnly affirmed that she would protect her no matter what since she was her only family, swearing on her own life as well as Casilda's. Mayte mentioned that they had Enrique too, which Luciana agreed with.[1]

Eventually, the group left the hideout in Luciana's van, and she assured Jaden that her van was sufficient for a mountain crossing. Luciana then asked him if he had 7.62mm rounds in his supplies for her AK, which he denied. Nonetheless, she accepted a pistol from him, thanking Mayte for handing it to her. Enrique looked at the hidden road on his map and advised Luciana to drive as discreetly as possible, annoying her enough to retort she did not need to be told twice. Immediately up ahead, Eda pointed out a military vehicle going in the opposite direction of them. Because Luciana sped past them, the two soldiers turned their vehicle around and began pursuing them. Enrique reminded her to be discreet, but she yelled back that it was hard to pass them anyway. The soldiers warned them to stop and intentionally rear ended them, so Luciana gave her AK to Eda, telling her she only had one magazine and asking her to use it wisely. As the soldiers began opening fire on the van, Eda peered out of the back passenger window and fired at them, injuring and incapacitating the driver. The soldier veered off to the side into a tank truck, causing an explosion that killed both men. On edge, Luciana chastised Eda for making such a loud scene, though the latter angrily reasoned that it was out of their control.

As they exited town, Luciana noticed that the smoke from the gas explosion had risen quite high, criticizing Eda for giving a noticeable marker to the tracking party. In response, Eda muttered that not everything works out as they desired. Luciana retorted that not everything went smoothly at the CIA, angering Eda. She purposefully teased Eda to provoke her, making Enrique urge them to stop since it was not an appropriate time to fight amongst themselves. Not seeing any pursuers, Jaden guessed that the military might be cleaning up the explosion aftermath or possibly gave up. Insulting him as being naïve, Enrique, Eda and Luciana all warn him to keep his eyes open and not let his guard down, making him quiet down. Soon, Luciana told everyone that they were en route to the mountain path. Nonetheless, Enrique posited that they needed to make as much distance as possible while they still had daylight. Hearing Jaden say he was hungry, Mayte offered him some sweet bread and also gave some to her sister.

When Jaden began ranting in despair about how his CIA work was not what he expected, Luciana asked him if he was okay, to which Eda admitted she had no idea. Jaden asked his fellow agent if she joined the CIA around the same time he did, also wondering how she fit in so well. Luciana jested that she did tell her she was born a stray dog, annoying her. Suddenly, their car was rear ended by another vehicle, startling them. The driver's accomplice shot at the van and broke their back window, causing everyone to duck to avoid the gunfire. Luciana tried to outmaneuver them but the enemy car again hit them on the side. Lining up with the car's front window, Eda pointed her pistol at the driver and opened fire, causing the pursuers to slow down. The enemy passenger shot at the back and successfully hit the back left tire, forcing Luciana to warn everyone to grab onto something. Their van slid on its bumper and was violently thrown onto its side.

Assessing that their van was no longer useful, Luciana recommended taking the enemy's car. Agreeing, Eda suggested that they wait for the men to leave the car. Enrique covered for Mayte and Jaden as they quickly took cover, also volunteering to cover the two women. Before they commenced their pincer attack, Luciana warned Eda not to damage the enemy car, and the former agreed to take the left whereas the latter would take the right. Breaking down the windshield, the two women shot at the two officers as they ran to some rocks for cover. Since the enemy was pinned down, Celino threw a grenade at their vehicle, but Luciana shot it before it could touch the vehicle, making it explode. As the passenger officer continued to shoot at Eda's cover, the driver pulled out another grenade, but Eda quickly shot him in the arm, causing his grenade to drop. Panicking, the two men attempted to run as the grenade blew the car into the air seconds later, shocking the CIA agents and guerrillas.[5]

Eda Initial Stage chapter 26

Luciana and co. retrieving their supplies from her damaged van.

Seeing that the enemy vehicle was unusable, they realized they could not travel by car anymore, so the group retrieved their remaining supplies and began trekking up the adjacent mountains. As they ascended, everyone but Jaden was exhausted from climbing, and they were frustrated as he urged them to stop lagging. When they took a break, Luciana shared a cigarette light with Eda, and the two women began to warm up to each other. At night, they finally set up camp near some rocks on a hillside and put all of their food supplies into one pot to cook. Finishing his special stew, Jaden handed the cups to everyone, with Luciana admitting that the soup was quite delicious. Sulking, Jaden told the group them not to speak to him like cooking was his only skill. Luciana complimented the tea's warmness and pulled out a bottle of alcohol from her bag, asking the group if they wanted a drink. Eda was skeptical about it since they were fugitives, but Luciana teased that she would put it away, making Eda want the alcohol.

Enrique shouted that he wanted a drink, so Luciana poured him one, much to Mayte's worry. She and the others listened to him go on a tirade about President Duarte and their goal to depose him. When he threw up, Eda claimed he was reckless, but Luciana rebuffed her opinion and explained Enrique's impact on her community. Solemnly, Luciana concluded that Enrique would bring a breath of fresh air to their country. After hearing the story, Eda merely replied that she was expecting too much, repeating that it was merely the hubris of a child. Some minutes later, as Enrique consoled Mayte about their situation, Víbora suddenly appeared, pushed Enrique away and grabbed Mayte. Hearing her sister, Luciana hit the hunter on the head with a large stick, urging Mayte to run away. She pulled out her pistol, but Víbora quickly grabbed her hand and neck. Near him, Eda shot him in the chest, but Víbora continued to hold onto the guerrilla and used her as a shield. Before the CIA agent could fire another shot, two intelligence officers working for Melgar came to his aid and shot at Eda. Angered, Luciana pulled out a knife and swiped it at Víbora, who grabed her left wrist, moving it behind her back to break the arm.

Still willing to fight, Luciana crawled toward her knife and grabbed it, smugly grinning back at Víbora. The guerrilla charged at him while Enrique attempted to shoot him, though Víbora dodged the latter's attack. However, the man grabbed Luciana's right arm and began to tighten his grip to break that arm as well. Víbora then caught her knife as it dropped and shoved it into her chest, fatally wounding her.[6] Completely shocked, Eda ran to Luciana and asked if she was all right. As she profusely bled, Luciana softly called out for Mayte, urging Eda to take care of her. With her last breath, she muttered Eda's name and collapsed. Infuriated, Mayte shot at and incapacitated Víbora as he beat up Enrique within an inch of his life. Begrudgingly agreeing with Eda that they needed to flee before other intelligence officers arrived on the scene, Mayte had to leave her deceased sister there.[7] After the self-coup's end, because of Luciana's murder coupled with Casilda's death and President Duarte being allowed by the CIA to remain in power, Mayte decided to disappear on her own to seek revenge.[8]
