Martin (マーティン Mātin), also known as Martin the Nosferatu ("
Appearance[]
Martin is a skinny adult man with short white hair, vampire-like teeth, vertically-slit pupils, and pale and sun-sensitive skin. He wears a black top hat, oval-shaped glasses, a long black overflowing buttoned coat with a collar that covered most of his face, and a hazmat mask behind his coat's tall collar. He carries two Beretta 93R machine pistols for weapons.
Personality and abilities[]
Martin genuinely believes himself to be a vampire due to a congenital disorder that makes him extremely sensitive to sunlight.[1] Additionally, he enjoys drinking on (supposedly) genuine human blood as part of his persona; in reality the "blood" is actually tomato juice.[2] He is disappointed in jobs where he cannot kill people since that means he cannot drink their blood. Despite his beliefs, he once stated that a stake through the heart would have the same lethal effect on him as it would on humans. As a mercenary, he is quite skilled and fast, being able to aim his pistol well and using knockout gas against his enemies. He prefers to work at night and also likes making flamboyant appearances, such as making his battle appearance by emerging out of a coffin and making use of his coat to act as a large engulfing cape.
Gore Gore Girl history[]
In all of his freelancing jobs, Martin employs Renfield as his assistant and personal driver. He uses a black, modified 1959 Cadillac Hearse which can fit a coffin in the back for himself as well as any people he captures.
Volume 5[]
When Picton had his right hand cut off by Jacqueline, he sought revenge against her but wanted her alive. In the hospital recovering from his injury, Picton sat in a bed as Nosferatu visited him, hearing out the man's job request to capture Jacqueline alive. Sucking on an IV of blood, Nosferatu told him that the request would be no problem, and he left. Later that night at the Roanapur Public Cemetery, Jacqueline was taking refuge there and had fallen asleep. As Sawyer the Cleaner, Bunny the Undertaker, The Undertaker No. 2, and Jessica wondered what to do with the young girl, a black van crashed through the cemetery and spun around, pushing out a Christian-cross coffin out the back doors. A mist formed as the coffin's lid opened, and out emerged Martin, who saw the surprised women and introduced himself as Nosferatu Martin. Seeing his hair and glasses, Sawyer initially mistook the mercenary for Lotton but immediately deduced that it was not him. Angry that he broke several gravestones, Bunny demanded that he clean up the mess.
Beginning to speak further, Nosferatu agreed that the property damage was rude but answered that he would put them under the gravestones once he finished them. Pulling out his machine pistol, Nosferatu began rapidly firing on them, causing No. 2 to tackle and shield Jacqueline from cover while the other three women barely dodged the bullets and took cover behind gravestones. Jessica fired back with her own pistol, but the bullets did not go through him. Immediately reloading his firearm, he fired again at Jessica as she hurriedly retook cover. As bullets rained onto her gravestone cover, Jessica calmly yelled to Sawyer to run away, but to her surprise both Sawyer and Bunny began to charge at Nosferatu. Seeing that the tall figure was pointing his gun at the charging women, Jessica used suppressive fire while lamenting that she should have killed him earlier.
Jessica's bullet hit near his heart as he suddenly jolted his arms upward reacting to it, making her wonder if she hit him. Gritting her teeth, Sawyer swung her chainsaw over her shoulder, but Nosferatu instantly dodged the attack and left behind a large mist which brought Sawyer and Bunny to their knees and into unconsciousness. Covering her mouth with a handkerchief, Jessica took her leave upon noticing the knockout gas. As Jessica fled, Nosferatu reminded himself that he was told to bring the target alive, revealing his hazmat mask behind his cloak's high collar. He also added that the gas's effect was weak outdoors but could reduce everyone's muscle movement even a little. Trying to quietly flee, No. 2 carried the sleeping Jacqueline and saw that she had been spotted by Nosferatu, who deduced the child to be his target.
Consequently, Martin quickly blocked her path and towered over her. Removing his mask and showing his vampire smile, Nosferatu maliciously remarked that he had to finish quickly but could try a taste. As No. 2 crouched and froze in great fear, Jacqueline woke up, seeing the figure and immediately thrusting her katana upwards. Despite her excellent speed, Nosferatu caught the blade with his pistol's angled foregrip, telling himself that it was a pity that he had to give Jacqueline to the "orc," but he reminded himself that it was work and he should not feel bad.[3]
After delivering Jacqueline to Picton, Martin took No. 2 to a storage room somewhere and tied her to a folding chair. When Martin stared at her, No. 2 asked him why he was keeping her captive, telling him that she had no worth as a hostage. Agreeing with her, Martin smiled and said that she was actually his food, commenting that her blood looked delicious. Slowly removing the burlap sack off her head, the alleged vampire commented that a child's blood was exceptional, causing the bob-haired No. 2 to ask where he took Jacqueline. He assured her that the child was still alive but coldly joked that the child would be better off dead. As Martin prepared to sink his fangs into the nervous No. 2's neck, Jessica suddenly appeared behind him with a hammer and a wooden stake, trying but failing to pierce Martin's head, but he vanished behind her. Kneeling defensively and surprised that he did not realize her presence, he asked her how long she had been there.
Smiling, Jessica remarked that she was disappointed since she wanted to see if the hammer and stake would work. Martin clarified that such a trick works on every person, to which Jessica replied by claiming that she had also prepared garlic and crosses. Pulling out a small capsule of liquid, Jessica stated that she had "holy water" that would fill the room with gas quickly if she threw it onto the ground, adding that it was a neurotoxin that, unlike Nosferatu's gas, would kill instantly. When Martin reminded her that she would die too if she deployed the chemical, Jessica only smiled and agreed in indifference. Laughing heartily in response, the vampire stated that he would leave for the time being and vanished, disappointing Jessica since she thought she would have fun with him.[1]
Volume 8[]
Sometime after meeting The Undertaker No. 2, Martin wanted to capture her again. Accordingly, he had his chauffeur Renfield drive for him so that he could abduct the woman. After doing so, Martin sat in the backseat with the tied-up woman, apologizing for being rough with her and clarifying that he was in the mood for her blood. Flashing his teeth, he said he would taste a sample of her blood, but he was interrupted when the car began to swerve and crashed into a tree. Still conscious, Martin asked Renfield what happened, to which the latter answered that there was a cat on the road he had to avoid hitting. As the former admitted that it was an okay reason for swerving the car, he noticed that the coffin slid out of the car's back and that No. 2 had escaped. Quickly entering the nearby forest, he found her restraints on the ground, indicating that she successfully fled the area. Not deterred, Martin ordered Renfield to help him search for her, so they headed back to town.
In inner Roanapur, he walked around and noticed Lotton sitting at an outdoor dining table. Martin nonchalantly complimented Lotton as "cool," a comment which the latter reciprocated. He introduces himself by his nickname, and Lotton the Wizard did the same. Taking a seat, the Nosferatu claimed that he had found Lotton, but the Wizard rebuffed the notion and calmly responded that he was the one who should be worried. Unknown to him, No. 2 was hiding right under the table. Renfield tried to politely interrupt their conversation, but his master told him to be quiet because he needed to talk with the stranger. Hearing Martin apologize and state that he had been busy, Lotton asked what was troubling him and learned that the supposed vampire was looking for a woman. The freelancer informed Lotton that he initially caught the woman like she was any other prey but began to have feelings for her as time went by, causing the latter to assess that he was in love.
When Martin wondered if it was strange for an assassin to want a lover, a cat came by and meowed under the table, grabbing their attention. Seeing her captor look under the table, the scared No. 2 backed up as Martin claimed that he would not hurt her and only wanted a little of her blood each day. Standing up, she rejected his request while Lotton blocked his path, annoying the vampire. Although he recalled he was going to help him, Lotton reasoned that he must defend No. 2 since without her help guiding him out of the forest, he would have certainly been late for his meeting and faced the wrath of his coworker. Replying that he understood, Martin nonetheless exclaimed that he then became his enemy, and the two freelancers pulled their pistols on each other. As they stood off, the two men were amazed by each other's choices in weaponry and tensely compliment each other's firearms. Martin opined that Lotton's Mauser M712 was a good choice and the Wizard likewise admired his M93R machine pistols. When the former mentioned that his weapon could do three-round bursts, the awed Lotton asked if he could have it. Grinning, Martin responded that he could have it if he won the fight.
Speaking about his own pistols, Lotton elaborated that his right gun was named Elegy. When the curious Martin asked what his left gun was named, the frustrated No. 2 yelled that she did not care whether she was saved or kidnapped. Martin moved toward her, prompting her to throw the cat at his face, shocking him. Removing the cat and hearing No. 2's insult about men, Martin warned her not to underestimate him. Suddenly, Sawyer came by and kicked him in the back of the head, knocking him down. Despite taking out the freelancer, she was also angry at Lotton for missing the meeting and gave him the same punishment as Martin.[4]
In a later story, Martin became acquainted with Lotton and hung out with him at an outdoor dining place. The vampire spoke about his feelings of true love for No. 2 but did not specify her. Subsequently, he ordered a glass of tomato juice and he and Lotton made a toast to true love. Behind them, they heard a voice screaming for them. Turning around and recognizing No. 2's voice and face, Martin saw her being pulled back into a speeding car. Immediately, he got up and ordered Renfield to start the Cadillac. Pursuing the woman's abductors, the three men soon arrived at a warehouse, which Martin recognized as Picton's Studio. Realizing that Lotton is not familiar with The Studio, he briefed him on its history of human trafficking, organ trafficking and snuff video production, adding that Picton ran the most dehumanizing business in Roanapur. He recalled that the "crazy scumbag" died a long time ago but admitted that he thought the Picton firm would be out of business, mentioning that Picton's younger brother took over.
Hearing the background, Lotton assessed that No. 2 was in great danger. Pulling out his pistols, Martin asserted that he would rescue her and not let her fall into the criminals' hands. Entering The Studio with Lotton behind him, he went into the production room and saw the tied-up No. 2 surrounded by several snuff film actors who prepared to injure her. Aiming at one actor, Martin shot him in the head and yelled at the woman to quickly flee. Quickly responding, the film crew brightened the stage lights and pointed them at the vampire freelancer, forcing him to kneel and hide his skin from the lights. At that point, the crew mocked him for his weakness to bright light, and the snuff film director pointed his pistol at the man. Before they could shoot Martin, No. 2, after being freed by Lotton, shot out the lights and reminded Martin that he came to save her.
Getting up, he reconvened with her and Lotton, and she thanked him for coming to save her. As he brushed it off and confessed that he came for her sake, he was surprised that she politely requested he let her go because she did not want to see him again. As Martin remained speechless, the director warned his crew to get moving, causing the vampire to turn around and shoot at the director and his crew. Although killing them, he fell down in the process. Addressing No. 2 and catching his breath, Martin affirmed that he would not give up on her no matter what she said. Acknowledging that it cannot be helped, she nonetheless requested that he bring her home. Blushing, Martin agreed and helped her vanish using his disappearing act.[2]
Trivia[]
