Marya Zaleska

The ship in episode 23 with a typo "Мария Зейрска" on the side.

Marya Zaleska (Russian: Мария Залеска; Japanese: マリア・ザレスカ号 Maria Zaresuka-gō) is a trade ship which is under the control of Hotel Moscow. Balalaika used the ship to travel to Japan from Roanapur.

Features[]

Marya Zaleska is a large freighter ship with an azure-color hull and a large white bridge. She has three masts and is large enough to carry vehicles like vans and small boats.

History[]

Fujiyama Gangsta Paradise[]

When Balalaika traveled to Japan to help the Japanese branch of Hotel Moscow strengthen their presence in the country, she used the Marya Zaleska to travel there. As her violent campaign against the Kōsa Council continued and escalated, the Tokyo police cordoned off the Kōsa Council's headquarters and began questioning Washimine Group members. Because of her concern that the Washimine gangsters would blow Hotel Moscow's cover, Balalaika decided that she would re-deploy her main team to the Marya Zaleska.[1] While Rock and Revy were busy, Balalaika ordered Boris and Polanski to deploy the Vysotniki against the Washimine Group, so multiple soldiers entered the vans that were brought onto the ship.[2] Accordingly, the vans drove off the Marya Zaleska and went into Washimine-controlled territory to destroy the Group's remaining bases and kill the enforcers. In the ship's war room, Boris listened to the soldiers report the enemy casualties to him, so one Hotel Moscow member crossed out pictures of Washimine gangsters who were eliminated. In response, Yukio Washimine and Ginji Matsuzaki were able to frame a bank robbery on one of the Russians' vans. Although Jodorowsky's van evaded police and got back to the ship, Boris decided that they would discard the van while Balalaika began to focus her attention on Yukio in particular.[3]

After Balalaika and Boris finished killing the remaining Kōsa Council members at their headquarters, the two used a Russian Federation embassy car to get passage to their ship, concluding their mission. In the anime only, Yukio deduced that the Russians got to Japan via watercraft and she wanted to get revenge on Balalaika for killing Tsugio Bandō, so she and Ginji kidnapped Rock to use as a hostage and shield when they confronted the Russians. To her dismay, Revy crashed their truck, saved Rock, and killed Ginji, preventing Yukio from clashing with Balalaika.[4] In the manga, Revy and Rock had to hurry to the Marya Zaleska or they would have been trapped in Japan by a police blockade, but they first stopped at a shrine to confront Yukio and Ginji.[5] In both the anime and manga, Revy and Rock left Japan by airplane instead of using the freighter.

Trivia[]

  • The ship is named after the fictional character Marya Zaleska from the 1936 vampire horror film Dracula's Daughter.
  • In the anime, the Cyrillic script on the ship's hull is a typo, which the animators misspelled as «Мария Зейрска» instead of «Мария Залеска».
