The Melanesia (めらねしあ丸 Meraneshia-maru) is a cargo ship which Asahi Heavy Industrial Co. used for discreetly transporting a disk containing nuclear weapon blueprints.

Melanesia is a large ship with a gray hull and several masts. Her beige bridge resides on the aft of the vessel.

Black Lagoon[]
When Asahi Heavy Industrial Co. made a deal with a war-torn country to give them nuclear weapon blueprints, Fujiwara entrusted his employee Rokurō Okajima with the disk for its delivery to another branch chief. Accordingly, Okajima boarded the Melanesia, which was headed to Borneo. On the way, the ship was suddenly attacked by Lagoon Company, with the pirates Dutch and Revy forcing Melanesia crew members to stay down with their hands on their head. Finding Okajima, Dutch punched him and took the disk, also asking him if it was the particular item he was ordered to deliver. Hearing from Benny that a Philippine Navy patrol boat was likely in the area, Dutch threatened to destroy the Melanesia with his PT boat's weaponry if the sailors chased after them. To Okajima's relief, everyone would be free to go in half an hour, but Revy took him hostage because she wanted extra money. Whereas Okajima was captured and later became a pirate, all other people onboard the Melanesia left the area safe and sound.[1]
Trivia[]
- Melanesia is the only water vessel in the Black Lagoon universe to have the ship-related suffix "maru" (丸), whereas all other named watercraft in the series are suffixed with "gō" (号). She is also the only ship in the series to have her name spelled with hiragana.
