Osama bin Laden, referred to as the "emir" (指揮官アミール Amīru) by his subordinates, is a Saudi-born Islamic dissident and militant leader who is the founder and general emir of al-Qaeda since 1988.

Bin Laden is an adult Arab man with a slender build and a long black beard. He wears a plain white turban.

Eda Initial Stage history[]

Originally an Afghan mujahideen member during the Soviet–Afghan War, in 1984 he was one of the founders of the Maktab al-Khidamat (MAK), which raised funds and recruited foreign mujahideen for the war against the Soviets. In 1988, he split from MAK and formed al-Qaeda as an organization for supporting Islamic causes in conflicts around the world. Following the Soviet Union's withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1989, bin Laden returned to Saudi Arabia and continued working with the Pakistani ISI and the Saudi General Intelligence Directorate. In 1991, he was forced to leave the country for publicly criticizing the Saudi government's "non-Muslim alliance" with the United States of America, particularly in the Gulf War. As he traveled across the world, he had a personal security detail of bodyguards personally selected by him.

In Black Lagoon: Eda Initial Stage, in the 1990s, al-Qaeda was one of several groups who sent foreign volunteers to aid Bosnian Muslims caught between Croatian and Serbian forces during the Bosnian War. After the Dayton Agreement which created the two entities making up Bosnia and Herzegovina, the anti-American extremists stayed in the country.[1] In due time, bin Laden traveled to the region to oversee al-Qaeda's attempt to expand their influence in the Balkans after the volunteers had to go into hiding.

Balkan crisis[]

When bin Laden prepared to travel to the Balkans, a woman who married one of the foreign volunteers became an informant to the CIA because her new husband turned out to be an abuser who frequently assaulted her and her daughter Nadja. At the same time, the woman gave information to the collaborator, a Serbian Christian woman who was part of a large, Balkan anti-extremist organization and was ordered to pursue leads pointing to bin Laden. Meanwhile, the United States had supported the Bosnian Muslim side since the beginning of the Yugoslav Civil War, but there were some anti-American extremists among them and therefore wanted the new Bosnian government to cut ties with the extremists.[2] When the collaborator killed four mujahideen in her quest to track down bin Laden, his forces found out about the murders, prompting extra security for him before he arrived.[3]

After the collaborator let Eda be captured by the extremist volunteers, bin Laden was soon escorted at night near the house where she was confined in to speak with the fighters. As Eda and the mother attempted to flee, the fighters caught them in their path and disarmed them. Bin Laden asked his bodyguards if the area was safe, which they confidently asserted and mentioned that they had captured an informant. Noticing her, he nonchalantly looked Eda in the eye, whereas she was completely shocked to see him. As the mujahideen volunteers were about to execute the two women and Nadja, CIA agents began their operation and shot several of the men, prompting bin Laden's bodyguards to quickly escort him to safety. Getting into the car, bin Laden successfully fled the area with his team thanks to a volunteer firing an RPG to deter several pursuing CIA agents. Although the CIA did not capture or kill the al-Qaeda leader, they were able to force the Bosnian government to cut ties with the Islamic extremists.[2]
