Polanski (ポランスキー上級曹長 Poransukī jōkyūsōchō), initially called Baronin in the English version of the anime, is an ex-Soviet Airborne Forces command sergeant major[1] who fought in the Soviet-Afghan War under Balalaika and later joined Hotel Moscow with her.
Appearance[]
Polanski is an adult man of Russian nationality with a skinny build, short blond hair, a thick mustache, and pale skin. He wears aviator shades, a green military uniform, and a telnyashka. When he is not in combat, he wears a suit and dress shirt.
History[]
In the anime, Polanski was seen at the graveyard with fellow soldiers grieving over the death of one of their comrades. Balalaika came to the men and told them that she would reactivate their military duty under her command, and all the men there gladly agreed to join her in the mafia.[2]
Chase for ring-ding ships[]
Only in the anime, it was shown that Polanski and other Hotel Moscow gangsters captured Donnie Yen and had him executed for abetting Chen's failed plan to murder the Lagoon Company.[3]
Bloodsport Fairy tale[]
Wanting to deduce the identities of the Romanian murderers of Sakharov, Menshov, and six other associates, Balalaika sent Polanski and a couple of other Hotel Moscow members to Jackpot Pigeons to bring Rowan "Jackpot" Pigeons to her in order to coerce him into handing over all of the child sexual exploitation tapes that he had involving Romanians. Once Balalaika singled out the children's identities, Polanski and fellow Vysotniki listened to her make a speech about how they would avenge their irreplaceable and murdered comrades.[4] Beginning the hunt for the twin children, he was the third officer in the chain of command (with Boris and Balalaika above him). When Gretel disappeared, Polanski ordered the Rabochek and Roborovski units to move to the final location for the next phase. From then on, he helped keep track of Hänsel's movements so that Balalaika could lure him into her lethal trap, resulting in the boy's murder.[5]
Fujiyama Gangsta Paradise[]
Later, Polanski traveled with Balalaika and Boris to Japan to repair Hotel Moscow's declining influence there. In the manga, Polanski got the order from Balalaika in her first meeting with Washimine Group members to set off the bomb in a nearby Kōsa Council club.[6] After the first wave of attacks on the Kōsa Council, he attended the second meeting between Balalaika and Tsugio Bandō.[7] He then accompanied Balalaika and Boris to their hotel room and learned about Vasili Laptev's assassination, a death which Boris was pleased to report since Balalaika wanted someone more competent to replace Laptev as the leader of Hotel Moscow's Japanese branch.[2]
Later when Balalaika decided to wage war against the Washimine Group instead of being their ally, he was in the war room of the Marya Zaleska and listened to Balalaika's declaration of war on the Washimine Group.[8] That morning, in the war room as the successful assassinations were carried out, Polanski reported the Vysotniki's victory of destroying one of the Washimine Group's offices to the two superiors, adding that Daniil's team was moving to the next site. The next day, he listened to Balalaika remark that she would focus on killing Yukio Washimine after the latter successfully framed a bank robbery on Hotel Moscow.[9] Once Balalaika ceased her attacks on the Washimine Group after greatly weakening them, Polanski and the rest of Balalaika's men departed from Japan on the Marya Zaleska back to Roanapur.[10]
El Baile de la muerte / Roberta's Blood Trail[]
When Balalaika chose to help the Grey Fox unit escape Roanapur and be protected from Roberta, Polanski sat near her on a rooftop as she radioed Shane Caxton and promised that he would leave unharmed. At that point, Polanski and the other troops covered Grey Fox's escape and used heavy firepower to prevent Roberta from chasing the U.S. soldiers any further.[11]
Trivia[]
- In the English version of Episode 15, Polanski is credited as Baronin, which is the name of one of the combat units in the manga. In Episode 23, the English credits correct his name back to Polanski, and his English voice actor is also switched from Brian Dobson to Mark Oliver.
