Sanchez (サンチェス Sanchesu) was a sergeant major in the U.S. National Security Agency's Grey Fox Commando Group. He was assigned as a sniper within the unit.
Appearance[]
Sanchez was a young adult man of Hispanic descent and American nationality. He had short black hair tied into a ponytail in the back with the sides of his head shaved. He wore a tactical vest over a black short-sleeved shirt and jeans, and he carried an M21 sniper rifle and a SIG-Sauer P226 pistol for weapons.
History[]
El Baile de la muerte / Roberta's Blood Trail[]
In the anime, Sanchez was seen participating in the bombing of an MVR political party inauguration in Venezuela, where he reported an MVR leader's arrival to the other Grey Fox soldiers. After the MVR leader walked to the area where the bomb was supposed to detonate, Sanchez and the other soldiers left the scene and the country for that matter. While leaving, other soldiers detonated the bomb, killing the MVR leader as well as Diego Lovelace.[1] Sanchez was not seen in the manga during the Venezuela mission.
Weeks later, Sanchez and Grey Fox carried out their next mission, Operation China Pit, to capture Shue Yan in the Golden Triangle, joining his leader Shane Caxton in traveling to Roanapur for a starting point. In the evening when various groups began to surround the soldiers' encampments in the hotels, Sanchez helped set up Claymore mines to make their escape to the rooftops. There, Roberta, who wanted revenge on the American soldiers for killing her master Diego, began to shoot at the soldiers, forcing them to take cover from the gunfire. Shane ordered two soldiers to use suppressive fire while Raymond McDougal escorted the other soldiers, including Sanchez, onto another rooftop away from Roberta's range.[2]
At night, Sanchez and the rest of his unit saw Roberta in an empty building and witnessed her in her deteriorating mental state. When they saw that she was going to kill Garcia Lovelace due to thinking that the child was a figment of her imagination, Master Sergeant Horner and Staff Sergeant Burroughs shot at her to move her away from the boy, and Sanchez tossed a smoke grenade in the area so that they could blind Roberta's sight and save Garcia.[3] Outside the building, the soldiers tried to calm down the frightened Garcia. The boy was still frightened by Horner when the latter offered him water, so Sanchez attempted to relate to him by speaking Spanish since he noticed Garcia had a Latino accent, also joking that Horner was not good at talking with children.[4]
Recognizing Caxton from a photograph, Garcia noticed that the troops were the same exact people responsible for killing Diego Lovelace, making him grab a nearby pistol on the ground. When Sanchez saw the boy point the gun toward Caxton, Sanchez quickly drew his pistol onto the boy, but Horner disarmed the child before Sanchez could shoot the gun away. Sanchez and the others were surprised by the boy's action, and the tearful Garcia told them that he knew they were members of the unit who killed his father in Barinas, Venezuela. When Caxton acknowledged responsibility for the murder and offered his own pistol to the boy for revenge, Sanchez and Horner pointed their rifles and demanded Caxton not to let him have the weapon, but Caxton ordered them to stand down.[5]
Although Garcia decided that he could not go through with taking revenge on Caxton, Roberta jumped down to attack Caxton but was thwarted by Sanchez's suppressive fire. Garcia told the troops not to kill her since her mental state was due to grieving over his father's murder.[6] As Sanchez and Horner watched over Garcia after Roberta ran away, Revy and Shenhua tried to interfere by planning to kill them and rescue Garcia, but Hotel Moscow shot the two women in the arm and leg respectively, making Sanchez immediately point his rifle in the women's direction. Soon, Hotel Moscow finished holding off Roberta so that the Grey Fox soldiers could escort themselves out of Roanapur, and Dutch allowed Caxton, Sanchez and co. to board his boat to travel northward on the Mekong River.[7]
In the heart of the Golden Triangle, Sanchez with another sniper accompanied Caxton to Shue Yan's camp, where they soon discovered that Roberta arrived there first and single-handedly killed Shue's guards and tied him up. Roberta moved into the nearby jungle, so Sanchez and other troops went after her to pursue her.[8] In the pitch black of night, Sanchez took a sniping position and soon heard fellow soldiers get injured and killed, terrifying him. He frantically pleaded with Caxton to give him permission to kill Roberta since she would not stop her rampage, but Caxton refused his order to continue through with Garcia's plan. When he saw Roberta and she killed his sniper partner and another soldier, Sanchez furiously screamed and charged at her while firing multiple rounds, but Roberta charged at him too and pierced his chest with her thrown bayonet, killing him. In the anime, Sanchez managed to injure Roberta with a Claymore mine minutes before he got killed.[9] In the manga, McDougal mentioned Sanchez's death as reason that he needed to kill Roberta, but Caxton shot McDougal before he could kill her.[10]
