History[]
El réquiem de los Desalmados[]
When Hotel Moscow had trouble aiding the Guadalajara Cartel in Cananea, Mexico and California, Varenkov acquired Maskaev's help via his Vysotniki unit. Despite the new numbers and localized victories, the Vysotniki were still outnumbered and had to withdraw, resulting in a significant amount of the Guadalajara Cartel's forces being wiped out. In addition to the trouble of the Nuevo Laredo Cartel allying with the newly formed cartel known as Los Soldados, the rival cartel expressed their desire for Vasily Krivchenko, who headed Hotel Moscow's operations in the region to be killed as a condition for truce. In response, he had to flee to Roanapur.
In Thailand, Varenkov and Krivchenko went to the Bougainvillea Trade Company and attended a meeting with Balalaika to discuss the news. Sitting down in her office, he apologized for the unexpected situation. She reminded him that she was told Maskaev's campaign in Cananea was a success, prompting Varenkov to admit that it would have been if not for the circumstances. He mentioned that Miguel Navarro's death was the catalyst for the region becoming unstable and the Guadalajara Cartel being greatly weakened. Although acknowledging that the Vysotniki did good work, Varenkov brought up the recent alliance between the Nuevo Laredo Cartel and Los Soldados as well as Navarro's successors being killed, concluding that the cartels wanted to settle the score due to Hotel Moscow's amount of damage to them. Sighing, he commented that he had held frequent meetings to resolve things with the Hispanic gangsters but the latter were bent on getting revenge since they viewed the ordeal as a matter of honor.
Assessing the situation, Balalaika remarked that she should have gone there to settle the matter personally. Varenkov's comrade replied that they could not always be shedding blood because the world of crime had entered an era of reconciliation and coexistence. Disagreeing, Balalaika asserted that Hotel Moscow was not taken seriously because they have avoided using more violence to destroy and conquer as they did before 1993. She elaborated that the Colombian Cartel was losing their seat on the Council at the next meeting, specifying that Fernando Lobos of the Nuevo Laredo Cartel would replace them. Finishing the meeting, the three Russians agreed to prepare for the arrival of a representative of Los Eses who was traveling to Roanapur to attend the Council meeting with Lobos to resolve the feud. Varenkov claimed that he would handle the negotiations, with Balalaika relaying to him that Slevinin ordered her to cooperate with Nuevo Laredo so that a decision on their dispute would be made.
On the night of the subsequent Council gathering, Varenkov accompanied Balalaika. In the meeting room, he remained silent as the formalities commenced. Once Gris el Tigres, the head of Los Soldados, arrived, Varenkov listened to him give his respect to Balalaika while warning her that nothing would stop him from crushing Hotel Moscow in Mexico.[2] After the meeting ended on a harsh note due to Gris adamantly vowing to kill Krivchenko in Roanapur before he returned to Mexico, Varenkov followed Balalaika out of The Golden Swingin Night Club. Being asked what they should do, he decided that he would head back to Russia to seek Slevinin's counsel and suggested that she prioritize protecting Krivchenko. She admitted that her headquarters was not concurrently prepared for a siege, and Varenkov guessed that Gris was likely true to his word, therefore reasoning that Krivchenko needed to be guarded until Slevinin judged whether or not he would be sent home.[3]
